Takehiro Tomiyasu Nears Ajax Move After Arsenal Exit

15.12.2025, 06:06

Former Arsenal Defender Set for Eredivisie Return

Takehiro Tomiyasu is on the verge of joining Ajax on a short-term deal until the end of the season, pending a medical scheduled for Tuesday. The Japan international has been a free agent since mutually parting ways with Arsenal in July, a year ahead of his contract’s expiration.

The 27-year-old defender, who underwent knee surgery in February, has since completed his rehabilitation and resumed training. His move to Amsterdam marks a fresh start after his time at Arsenal, where he made 84 appearances following his arrival from Bologna in 2021. His final game for the Gunners was a 3-1 victory over Southampton in October 2024.

Tomiyasu’s departure from Arsenal was influenced by the club’s summer signings of defenders Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera, which limited his first-team opportunities. Sources close to the deal confirm that his agreement with Ajax does not include an option for extension.

Currently fourth in the Eredivisie, Ajax will look to Tomiyasu’s experience to bolster their defensive options as they push for a stronger finish in the Dutch league.
