Freiburg vs Union Berlin Prediction: 08.11.2026 Bundesliga

Third hosts sixteenth at the Europa-Park-Stadion, and on current form this looks like a home banker. The fixture history refuses to cooperate. Union Berlin are unbeaten in the last four league meetings between these clubs, two wins and two draws, and Freiburg have managed a single goal across that entire run. Form points one way, history nudges the other, and that tension is exactly where the betting interest sits.

There is a personal angle too. Janik Haberer returns to the club where he made his name, and he arrives as Union’s sharpest threat, scoring two of the three goals his side have managed in the last five matches. Igor Matanović leads the Freiburg line at the other end with two goals and 14 shots in the same stretch, so that duel may decide the afternoon.

The standout stat from recent weeks: every one of Freiburg’s last three wins came by a single goal, 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2. They win, but they do not run away.

Freiburg vs Union Berlin prediction

Freiburg to win is our main call, and at an average price of 1.52 it is the sensible anchor. Bookmakers make Julian Schuster’s side roughly 64% likely to take the points, and the numbers back that up. Freiburg have won five of eight this month, a 63% winrate, sit third with 16 points from eight league games, and have beaten Trabzonspor, Augsburg and Wolfsburg in the past fortnight. Union have one win in five, a 20% winrate, seven points from eight matches, and a -12 goal difference that tells its own story.

The straight 1.52 leaves little margin on its own, so the value lives in the combos. Freiburg’s matches average 3.5 goals this season, Union’s 3.25, and Freiburg have kept just one clean sheet in five. Union have still scored in three of their last five despite the slump. That points to Freiburg win with both teams scoring as the standout play, with over 2.5 goals as the safer half of the same idea.

Style reinforces the read. Freiburg complete around 83% of their passes and win 5.8 corners per game, so they will hold the ball and pin Union deep. Union sit closer to 76% in passing, commit 12.6 fouls per match, pick up three yellow cards a game and collected a red in the last five. Expect a scrappy, low-block away side that fouls to break rhythm and surrenders territory. That pattern feeds Vincenzo Grifo’s set-piece delivery, stacks up corners and keeps the referee busy, all of which suits the hosts. Freiburg’s front line is also caught offside more than twice a game, a sign of aggressive runs in behind that should stretch Union’s back three-and-a-half.

🔥Hot Tip: Freiburg to win & both teams to score
⚽Total Goals: Over 2.5
💥Both Teams To Score: Yes
🎯Total Corners: Over 9.5

Team Analysis

Freiburg’s month reads five wins and three defeats, and the shape of it matters. A three-match losing skid that included Bayern Munich and Monaco gave way to the current run of three straight victories. The focus match is the most recent one, a 1-0 win away to Trabzonspor in Europe, a controlled, disciplined display built on a clean sheet. Before it came 2-1 against Augsburg and 3-2 against Wolfsburg, both wins with nerves attached. Mio Backhaus has been busy all month, 16 saves in five matches, and the defense finally gave him a quiet night in Turkey. In our preview of Trabzonspor vs Freiburg we called a narrow home win for the Turkish side, and the 1-0 result delivered it.

Union’s last five: a 1-1 draw with Köln, a 5-0 cup thrashing by the same club, 1-1 with Augsburg, 0-0 with Dortmund and a 1-0 win over Elversberg. One win, three draws, seven goals conceded in the last three games. The focus match, the 1-1 with Köln on 1 November, summed them up: competitive, awkward, but unable to turn resistance into three points. Haberer has two of the three goals in this run, and Mauro Lustrinelli is leaning on him heavily because the attack produces little else. Nineteen goals conceded in eight league games is the worst kind of foundation for a trip to the league’s third-best attack. In our preview of Union Berlin vs FC Köln we tipped Köln to take the points with goals at both ends, and the 1-1 draw went against us.

Pre-game odds and win probability: Freiburg the favourite

  • Moneyline Freiburg 1.52 | Union Berlin 5.98
  • Draw 4.62

Those prices imply roughly 66% for Freiburg, 22% for the draw and 17% for Union once the bookmaker margin is stripped out, which lines up neatly with the 64/20/16 consensus. The market and the form table agree, so there is no edge in the straight win itself. We think the small mispricing sits in the goal markets: Freiburg’s one-goal wins and Union’s habit of nicking a goal make the win-plus-BTTS combination sharper than 1.52 on its own. Union at 5.98 is tempting only if you trust the head-to-head record more than current form, and we don’t.

Possible Starting Lineups

Freiburg possible starting eleven

  • GK: Mio Backhaus
  • DF: Lukas Kübler, Matthias Ginter, Maximilian Rosenfelder, Christian Günter
  • MF: Maximilian Eggestein, Yannick Engelhardt, Yuito Suzuki, Vincenzo Grifo, Jan-Niklas Beste
  • FW: Igor Matanović

This is the 4-2-3-1 Schuster has favoured all season, built strictly on appearances over the last five matches. Eggestein and Engelhardt screen the back four, with Suzuki, Grifo and Beste supporting Matanović. Grifo’s two assists and dead-ball delivery make him the creative hub, and Matanović’s 14 shots mark him as the main goal threat. Philipp Lienhart and Cyriaque Irié are the likeliest changes if Schuster rotates after the European trip.

Union Berlin possible starting eleven

  • GK: Frederik Rønnow
  • DF: Derrick Köhn, Leopold Querfeld, Zeno Van Den Bosch, Tom Rothe
  • MF: Rani Khedira, Michel Aebischer, Woo-Yeong Jeong, András Schäfer, Janik Haberer
  • FW: Tim Skarke

Lustrinelli mirrors the 4-2-3-1. Khedira and Aebischer shield the defense, with Haberer pushed into the advanced role after two goals in five matches. Van Den Bosch has played every minute and leads the side with 12 interceptions, while Felix Uduokhai’s red card in the recent run complicates the backline picture. Skarke gets the nod up front on minutes, with Livan Burcu and Emmanuel Latte Lath as alternatives, and captain Christopher Trimmel offers experience off the bench.

The Verdict

Freiburg 2-1, and we think the script writes itself. The hosts control the ball, win the corner count and force Union into the fouling, card-collecting pattern they have shown all season. Matanović scores, Grifo supplies, and Union grab a goal through Haberer because clean sheets have been rare for Freiburg lately. Maybe the four-match hoodoo in this fixture stretches to five, and honestly the draw is the only realistic alternative given how many stalemates Union grind out. We don’t see it. Freiburg’s three-match winning run, home advantage and a 2.25 goals-per-game attack against the league’s leakier defense should be enough, even if the margin stays tight like always.
