Strasbourg are making waves in French and European football, but their partnership with Chelsea remains a contentious issue among some fans. Currently fifth in Ligue 1, they are also competing in the Conference League, hosting Crystal Palace next in a crucial match.

The club, bought by BlueCo ownership under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for £65m, has faced criticism from hardcore ultras who label them as Chelsea’s “feeder club.” Club president Marc Keller vehemently denies this claim.

A Complex Relationship

Several high-profile transfers between the clubs have raised eyebrows, including Ben Chilwell’s free transfer, Mathis Amougou’s move to Strasbourg, and Mamadou Sarr’s £12m transfer to Chelsea followed by a season-long loan back. Additionally, Ishe Samuels-Smith, Mike Penders, and Kendry Paez have also moved between the clubs.

Strasbourg’s ultras, with a combined membership of 1,539, argue that the multi-club model undermines traditional club values. Keller has previously criticized the ultras for targeting star striker Emanuel Emegha, who is set to join Chelsea in 2026.

Keller’s Defense

“I know a minority of people are still asking questions about the multi-club model,” Keller told BBC Sport. “Of course, we continue dialogue, and I think the best answer is on the pitch. I don’t think we are a feeder club, because a feeder club sends three, four, five, six players to Chelsea every season. It’s more like a younger brother relationship.”

Keller, who led the consortium that bought Strasbourg for one euro in 2012, has revitalized the club, bringing them back to Ligue 1 and into European competition. The club’s partnership with Chelsea has allowed them to dream bigger and aim for consistent European qualification.

Investment and Ambition

The investment from BlueCo is evident at the Stade de la Meinau, where a £157m redevelopment is underway, expanding the stadium’s capacity to 32,000 seats. The club has also invested heavily in a young squad, averaging just 21.5 years of age.

“We are investing a lot in a young generation,” Keller said. “It can happen that one player per year is good enough for Chelsea. But our project is to have other players around top clubs in Europe, not just Chelsea.”

The Future of Multi-Club Ownership

Multi-club ownership is becoming a global trend, with almost half of the top five European leagues’ clubs now under such models. Keller emphasizes that each model is different and that Strasbourg’s partnership with Chelsea is designed to be smart and positive.

“Every MCO is different,” Keller said. “We are trying to set up a smart organisation that works closely and positively, and within regulations from Uefa and Fifa.”

If Strasbourg and Chelsea were to end up in the same European competition, they could face restrictions on loaning players to each other, as seen with other multi-club ownership models.
