Sheffield Wednesday enter administration and will incur 12-point penalty

Sheffield Wednesday have filed a notice to be placed into administration after it emerged that His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs was preparing a winding-up petition.

The notice was submitted to the Insolvency and Companies Court at the High Court on Friday morning. The Championship club will face a 12-point deduction as a result.

Club staff have been briefed and administrators held a meeting with players ahead of the weekend fixture. The Owls host Oxford United at Hillsborough on Saturday, kick-off 15:00 BST. BBC Sport has contacted the club and the EFL for comment.

Going into administration would bring an end to a decade of ownership by Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, who took over in March 2015 with hopes of returning the club to the Premier League.

The club sit bottom of the Championship. A 12-point deduction will leave them 15 points adrift of safety.

  • Previous high points under Chansiri included a play-off final defeat to Hull City in May 2016.
  • They were relegated to League One in 2020–21 after a six-point deduction for breaching spending rules.
  • Darren Moore oversaw promotion back to the Championship in 2023, then left by mutual consent; Danny Rohl steadied the club after a poor start under Xisco Munoz.

Financial problems have persisted. Wages were reported late in May and earlier in March, and the club have not paid wages on time in five of the past seven months. They are currently subject to five EFL embargoes.

Danny Rohl left in July to take the Rangers job, with his assistant Henrik Pedersen stepping up while the squad remained small because of the financial constraints.

Supporter unrest has been visible all season. Fans staged boycotts of the EFL Cup ties with Leeds United and Grimsby Town, a group entered the pitch during the 5-0 home defeat by Coventry City, and there was a mass boycott of the league game against Middlesbrough.

Chansiri has been absent from the club throughout this period of turmoil. The club and league have been approached for further comment.
