Gilmour was forced off during the first half of Scotland‘s 4-1 victory over Curacao on Saturday with a knee injury. Manager Steve Clarke admitted he feared the worst, and it was subsequently confirmed that the 46-cap Napoli midfielder would miss the tournament entirely. With experienced cover thin on the ground, Clarke turned to a younger option, and on Sunday morning the call-up of Fletcher was made official.

Following the news of Billy Gilmour’s injury we can confirm that 19-year-old Tyler Fletcher has been added to our @FIFAWorldCup squad after making his debut against Curaçao yesterday. Welcome aboard, Tyler!

Who Is Tyler Fletcher?

Fletcher is the son of Man United and Scotland legend Darren Fletcher. He was introduced at half time of Saturday’s match for his senior international debut, with just one previous appearance for Scotland‘s Under-21s to his name. That limited track record underlines how little top-level experience the teenager carries into this squad.

At club level, Fletcher has accumulated 17 minutes across two Premier League appearances for Man United, including a 16-minute outing on the final day of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion. He made 18 appearances in Premier League 2 during 2025-26 and completed the full 90 minutes in all three of the Red Devils’ fixtures in this season’s EFL Trophy.

Clarke is likely to use Fletcher as depth across defensive midfield, central midfield, and attacking midfield roles.

What Comes Next for Scotland

Scotland are set to fly to the United States in the coming days for a pre-tournament friendly against Bolivia on Saturday. A week later comes their first World Cup fixture in 28 years, a potentially decisive group opener against Haiti. Morocco and Brazil follow as the Tartan Army look to secure a place in the last 32.
