Ronaldo’s Red Card Raises Questions
Cristiano Ronaldo received a straight red card during Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, leaving his participation in the 2026 World Cup in jeopardy.
The incident occurred with Portugal trailing 2-0. Ronaldo clashed with Dara O’Shea, striking the defender’s back with his elbow. Referee Glenn Nyberg initially showed a yellow card but upgraded it to red after reviewing the incident. This marks Ronaldo’s first red card for Portugal in his 226th appearance.
A Crucial Match Without Ronaldo
Portugal will be without their captain for Sunday’s home match against Armenia, a game they must win to secure their spot at the tournament. The red card automatically carries a one-match suspension, ruling Ronaldo out of this crucial qualifier.

Potential World Cup Impact
Ronaldo had announced that the 2026 World Cup would be his final major tournament. However, he now risks missing the start of it due to the red card. Violent conduct almost always carries an extended suspension, with additional games served in competitive fixtures.
If Portugal secure a win against Armenia to qualify directly, their next competitive match would be their opening group game at the World Cup. If they drop into the play-offs, Ronaldo would miss the semi-final and potentially the final.
Fifa’s Decision Awaited
The number of games Ronaldo will be banned for is in the hands of Fifa’s disciplinary committee. Technically, Fifa could opt not to extend Ronaldo’s ban, meaning he would not miss the start of the tournament.
However, Fifa’s disciplinary code states that a red card for “assault, including elbowing, punching, kicking, biting, spitting or hitting an opponent” should carry a three-match suspension. This would see Ronaldo miss Portugal’s first two World Cup group games or both play-off matches.
But Fifa judges these matters on a case-by-case basis. For instance, at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Lauren James was given two matches for stamping on the back of Michelle Alozie. Therefore, Ronaldo might only receive a two-match suspension despite the potential three-game ban.
