Due to Russian attacks on the eastern Ukrainian city, the team is currently forced to play its home matches in exile in Kyiv under strict security measures, and will open its league campaign at home on 1 August.
Kharkiv have spent 12 days in Austria for the main block of their pre-season, with eight friendlies planned in total. Head coach Mladen Bartulovic has reshaped the squad around a possession-based style, adding several youngsters plus new arrivals Parako (Venezuela), Yatsyk (Ukraine) and Profini (Argentina); a setback came when Matviy Panchenko was ruled out for three to four months with a training injury. Their camp form has been mixed: an emphatic 6:2 win over Qarabağ was followed by a 0:2 loss to Switzerland’s Young Boys.
