Manchester City have won five of their last six games, and their most recent outing summed up the run perfectly. A 1-0 win at Old Trafford against Manchester United kept the derby bragging rights at the Etihad, with Haaland once again the difference-maker. In our preview of Manchester United vs Manchester City we backed City to win the derby while probably conceding along the way, and the 1-0 final score delivered the win itself even though City kept a clean sheet rather than the scrappier scoreline we floated.
Before that, City beat Porto 2-0, edged past Coventry 1-0, hammered Crystal Palace 4-1 and saw off Bournemouth 2-1. That’s four wins and one draw hidden nowhere in that sequence, a run good enough to put any cup opponent on notice.
Norwich arrive in worse shape defensively. Their last match ended 3-4 against Middlesbrough, a game where they scored three but still lost because their back line kept giving Middlesbrough openings. Before that they beat Birmingham 2-1 and Sheffield United 3-1, lost 0-1 to Stoke City, and beat Burnley 4-1. Norwich can clearly score against sides at their level, but their defensive frailty against sharper opposition is the concern heading into Manchester.

We predict a comfortable Manchester City win, and probably a fairly one-sided one at that. Their last five results show a side scoring freely and defending well against opposition of far higher quality than Norwich, who have shown they can be broken down by teams that press and pass with purpose. Perhaps the only surprise on the night would be a heavily rotated City side taking their foot off the gas, but even then the gap in quality should tell in the closing stages.
