Kylian Mbappé‘s political comments rarely go unnoticed, and his latest remarks to Vanity Fair about the prospect of the far right reaching power in 2027 were no exception. Now Michel Platini has weighed in, and his position is mixed at best.

Speaking on RTL on Friday, the former UEFA president said Mbappé was “right” to have a view and express it. The reservation came immediately after. “If he’s in Madrid or somewhere else, he can take a political stance, of course. But wearing the captain’s armband of France, wearing the France shirt, you play for every French person. So it’s difficult to take a position.” For Platini, the issue is not the substance of what Mbappé said, but the context, particularly with the World Cup weeks away and every spotlight already pointed at the Bleus.
“The moment you take a position, you’re going to fall out with half the world.”
Platini argued that people are “very hard” on the Real Madrid forward, more so for his off-pitch statements than for anything he does on it. His advice pointed toward the approach taken by Zidane, Messi, and Ronaldo: say as little as possible, because public positions cost you half your audience. “You have to be careful. Or try to speak without actually saying anything.”
The contradiction in Platini‘s argument is visible. In the same breath, he praised Mbappé for going beyond sport. “It’s good that intelligent people can take positions on social issues. Footballers aren’t necessarily idiots. Some of them are reasonably intelligent.” He did add that Mbappé appears to own what he says: “Unless you stand fully behind everything you say. I think Kylian does.”
The underlying tension is familiar. Be a public figure with a conscience when you are off national duty, but stay neutral once the blue shirt is on. As Michael Jordan once put it, “Republicans buy sneakers too”, a reminder that commercial and political considerations have always pulled athletes in opposite directions. Mbappé, for now, has chosen the louder path. Follow TipsGG for continued coverage of the France squad ahead of the World Cup.
