Nottingham Forest Push to Sign Newcastle's Jacob Murphy Before Window Closes

Nottingham Forest are working on a deal to sign Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy in the summer transfer window.

Murphy has yet to secure a start for Newcastle in the Premier League this season, coming off the bench in both of their games. At 31, he has slipped down the pecking order at St James’ Park, and with his contract entering its final year, the door appears to be opening for a summer exit.

During the 2024-25 season, Murphy contributed 23 goals and assists across 41 appearances, but struggled to replicate that form last term. With his contract set to expire, this represents one of Newcastle’s final chances to generate a fee from his sale rather than losing him for nothing.

It has been a difficult start to the campaign for the Midlands club: Oliver Glasner’s side fell to defeat against Leeds United in their opening Premier League fixture before being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by the same opposition days later. They showed improvement when they faced Liverpool in their second league game, earning a point away at Anfield.

Bringing in a new winger is a clear priority before the deadline. Forest lost Dilane Bakwa to Lille on loan earlier in the window, leaving a gap on the right-hand side of attack that Murphy could fill.

Glasner operates a 3-4-2-1 system where attacking players beyond the striker tend to operate centrally. Murphy’s defensive work rate and ability to get forward could see him deployed as one of the wider centre-backs in that shape, adding versatility to a squad that needs fresh options before the window shuts.
