Manchester United closed the summer transfer window quietly, falling short on their primary defensive target. Despite a clear need for left-back cover to compete with Luke Shaw, the club could not get a deal done. A late attempt to sign Manchester City‘s Rayan Ait-Nouri collapsed over the rivals’ insistence on an obligation-to-buy clause.
United are now expected to revisit left-back recruitment in 2027, with a January move possible but unlikely given the club’s historically subdued mid-season window. Free transfers remain an option before the year ends, but this current group is the expected squad for the first half of the campaign. Here is the strongest XI United can field right now.
Goalkeeper: Senne Lammens
Lammens has been the undisputed No.1 since ousting Altay Bayindir last year, and that status is not under serious threat. Free signing Karl Darlow, who was dependable at Leeds last season, provides reliable backup. His appearances are expected to be limited to cup competitions if Lammens remains fit.
Defence: Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw
The right-back battle between Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui remains open. Dalot has edged ahead on limited early-season evidence, but the competition will run deep into the year.
Martinez was exceptional on his return last weekend. His ability to play through the lines against Ipswich was transformative for the Reds. Injury remains the only genuine threat to his place. Partnering him is less settled. Maguire is dependable, while Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, and Matthijs de Ligt once fit will all push for starts. Yoro was widely expected to break through this season, but he faces a tough road into the starting XI. Shaw, as the squad’s only recognised senior left-back, holds an uncontested spot.
Midfield: Carlos Baleba, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes
Fernandes is non-negotiable. As captain and talisman, his presence defines how United function in the final third.
Mainoo’s place is nearly as secure. Like Martinez, he was outstanding against Ipswich and carried the energy of a player with a point to prove after a disappointing World Cup. His midfield partner is the genuine selection question. Summer additions Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Baleba all bring different profiles. Tielemans suits a defensive pairing with Mainoo in lower-stakes fixtures, but that combination looks unlikely in high-pressure matches. Baleba is expected to edge Santos for the advanced role, though the former Chelsea man has shown early promise. Mason Mount built momentum in pre-season before an injury sustained against Paris Saint-Germain disrupted his campaign.
Attack: Bryan Mbeumo, Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Sesko
Few would have predicted this as United’s first-choice attack at the end of last season. On current evidence, it is difficult to argue against it.
Rashford is visibly motivated. His performance against Ipswich was sharp, and when operating at that level he keeps Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha on the bench. On the right, Mbeumo holds the edge over Amad, though the depth at that position means United absorb a minimal drop in quality when Amad starts. His pre-season form will keep that competition alive and represents a positive selection headache going forward.

Sesko’s value has grown even from limited game time. Cunha showed improvement against Ipswich compared to his showing against Hull, but United require a genuine focal point at centre-forward. Sesko provides that. The £62.5m man remains a work in progress, but the foundation United have built this window gives the squad genuine competition across every line.
