Doncic’s Award Eligibility in Jeopardy After Thunder Loss
Luka Doncic faces a compounding setback after suffering a hamstring injury during Thursday’s 139-96 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The injury struck in his 64th game of the season, leaving him one game short of the 65-game minimum required for All-NBA and MVP consideration.
The Los Angeles Lakers star played in 83% of the team’s 77 games to that point. The NBA rulebook permits a grace exception for players appearing in at least 85% of their team’s contests before suffering a season-ending injury. Since Doncic fell short at 83%, he would need to appear in at least one additional game to qualify for end-of-season honors.
What the MRI Will Reveal
Doncic underwent an MRI on Friday to assess the injury’s severity. A grade 1 strain would sideline him for approximately one week, mirroring his earlier absence this season from the same injury type. A grade 2 strain carries a steeper toll, potentially forcing multiple weeks of missed games and threatening his playoff availability.
The best-case scenario permits Doncic to return before the Lakers complete their final five games, keeping his All-NBA eligibility alive. The worst case ends his MVP aspirations for the season.
“Depending on how much time Doncic has to miss, Thursday might have cost him not only a shot at his first MVP but even his eligibility for the award at all. The game was his 64th of the season, and players must play 65 to qualify for end-of-season awards. The Lakers have five games remaining.”
Scoring Title Already Secured
Doncic will capture the NBA scoring title for the second time in his career, regardless of his injury status. Having appeared in 64 games, he exceeds the 58-game threshold necessary for the award. The guard has posted 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, 7.7 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per contest this season.
The Season-Ending Injury Exception
The NBA collective bargaining agreement contains language that could rescue Doncic‘s eligibility. Under this provision, a player reaching 62 games played and appearing in 85% of their team’s games at the time of injury may qualify for awards if the injury qualifies as season-ending. A physician jointly selected by the NBA and players’ association must determine whether the injury makes it substantially more likely than not that the player cannot compete through May 31.
Current indications suggest Doncic‘s hamstring strain may coincide with season’s end rather than define it, disqualifying him from this exception.
What’s Next
The Lakers (50-27) travel to face the Dallas Mavericks (24-52) on Sunday before returning home for a rematch against Oklahoma City (61-16). Doncic‘s availability for these contests remains uncertain pending MRI results and medical clearance.
