LeBron James Misses All-NBA Teams After 21-Year Streak Ends

LeBron James Ruled Out of All-NBA Honors

The Los Angeles Lakers lost 136-108 to the San Antonio Spurs, but the night’s bigger story unfolded off the court. LeBron James is no longer eligible for All-NBA teams ending a 21-year streak, the longest in league history.

James missed his 18th game this season due to arthritis in his left foot. That absence makes it impossible to reach the 65-game minimum required for award consideration, a rule introduced this season.

Lakers coach JJ Redick weighed in before the Spurs game:

Having guidelines for voters is fair. But turning them into a rigid constraint might not always be the best solution.

Redick, a former voter, noted that in past seasons, players with 54-56 games were still in the running for honors.

Debate Over the 65-Game Rule

The rule aims to encourage player availability, but cases like James’ have sparked criticism. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson supports the intent but questions the specifics:

The intention makes sense 82 games is demanding. But whether 65 is the right number is another discussion.

Johnson pointed out that injuries can unfairly penalize elite performances. Last season, Victor Wembanyama played only 46 games but led the league in blocks per game (3.8) and was a Defensive Player of the Year candidate.

Luka Doncic’s Tight Window

The rule also affects Luka Doncic, who has missed 11 games with a hamstring strain. He can afford only six more absences to remain eligible. Sources say Doncic resumed running Monday and may return soon possibly against the Dallas Mavericks.

At 26, Doncic is the leading All-Star vote-getter for the first time, surpassing 3 million votes. His status for the All-Star Game remains a priority.

James’ streak is over, but the conversation around load management and award eligibility is just beginning.
