National team coach Brian Riemer moved to fill the void left by Morten Wieghorst‘s departure, and Nielsen emerged as the chosen candidate from a competitive field.
“Kent Nielsen is a great asset who fits perfectly into the team I wanted to assemble with different skills. With Morten Wieghorst‘s departure, I wanted an assistant coach with a lot of experience, and Kent Nielsen also shares the same offensive approach to the game as me, which is why I have chosen him as the new assistant coach for my team ahead of many strong candidates.”
“Kent Nielsen is also a legend in the Danish national team and knows what it means to wear the red shirt and represent the entire Danish population. It is a very strong addition to the team.” — Brian Riemer
At 64 years old, Nielsen brings over 600 Superliga matches of managerial experience, having taken charge at Horsens, AaB, Brondby, OB, and most recently Silkeborg IF.
He steps into the role during the summer break. His first assignment will come in September, when Denmark face Norway away in the Nations League.
