Chosen to lead the line despite constant speculation about his future, Joshua Zirkzee finally ended his Premier League drought as Manchester United overturned a deficit to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. It was his first league goal since last December — and the timing couldn’t be more intriguing.

If Zirkzee does leave Old Trafford in January, he’ll walk away having at least broken his long dry spell. The Dutch striker had gone almost a full year without a Premier League goal before finding the net on Sunday. For a player whose opportunities have been limited, the breakthrough matters.

Signed for £34 million from Bologna late in Erik ten Hag’s tenure, Zirkzee has spent much of this season watching others take his minutes. United’s £200 million summer investment in attacking talent, combined with Mason Mount’s return to fitness, pushed him far down Ruben Amorim’s depth chart.

He could have departed in the summer had a suitable offer arrived, but the landscape shifted once Napoli’s move for Rasmus Højlund opened the door for Benjamin Sesko. With Sesko the first-choice No.9 and Matheus Cunha the preferred backup, Zirkzee has been eyeing the exit — especially with Holland’s World Cup squad on his mind and Roma showing interest.

An Opportunity Born Out of Necessity

His start at Selhurst Park wasn’t symbolic of a changing hierarchy; it was simply a matter of availability. Both Sesko and Cunha were out, and Amorim prefers Bryan Mbeumo to operate from the right rather than as a central striker. Even so, few predicted Zirkzee would seize the chance the way he did.

This resurgence felt impossible just weeks ago when Cunha was thriving and Sesko was starting to adapt. Even at the end of the summer window, Amorim was content to let Zirkzee leave if the bid made sense.

But football turns on moments, and Zirkzee delivered one. After a sluggish United first half and some stern words in the dressing room, the Dutchman produced the equaliser in the 54th minute, cancelling out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s opener. Mason Mount would go on to score the winner, but Zirkzee’s strike shifted the match.

More than the goal, his hold-up play, movement, and physical presence showed exactly what Amorim has been wanting to see.

“Scoring is important but it’s not just the goals. Joshua has improved a lot in how he holds the ball. He influences the game — that’s crucial for us.”

It’s the type of performance that builds trust. It’s also the type that complicates January.

Backed by the Dressing Room

United captain Bruno Fernandes echoed the sentiment, highlighting both Zirkzee’s value and his potential to reset his season completely.

“Strikers want goals, but Josh offers so much more. We know this will give him confidence to create more and take more chances — he’s capable of that.”

The message is clear: Zirkzee isn’t just filling a gap — he’s contributing meaningfully.

A Short-Term Solution or the Start of a Revival?

With United still navigating injuries and inconsistency, Amorim may need Zirkzee more than expected in the coming weeks. His pressing, link-up play, and ability to operate between the lines give United a different profile from Sesko’s directness or Cunha’s dynamism.

Yet the looming January window still casts a shadow. If Sesko and Cunha return, Zirkzee could easily find himself back on the periphery — and back on the market.

For now, though, he has carved out an unexpected role at exactly the moment United needed him. And for the first time in months, the story surrounding Joshua Zirkzee feels like it has genuinely changed.
