Jermain Defoe Appointed Head Coach at Woking FC

Jermain Defoe has secured his first permanent head coaching position, taking over at National League side Woking. The 43-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur and England striker replaces Neal Ardley at the Laithwaite Community Stadium following a comprehensive recruitment process.

While Defoe held various coaching positions since retiring from playing, this appointment marks his first permanent residency in the dugout. He previously worked on an interim staff at Rangers and spent time developing young talent within the Tottenham Hotspur academy.

Vision and Club Philosophy

Club chairman Todd Johnson confirmed that Defoe’s modern approach to football and player development separated him from competing candidates.

“Jermain’s achievements as a player speak for themselves, but what stood out to us during the process was how he sees the game, how he drives standards, and his approach to leadership and player development. We have a clear plan for where we want to go as a club, and we believe Jermain is the right person to build on the strong foundations already in place and help take us forward in the next phase of that journey.”

Defoe expressed enthusiasm about the role.

“Woking is a historic club with huge potential, and I’m thrilled to be part of this exciting project. I can’t wait to get started.”

Coaching Structure and Interim Success

Defoe will work alongside experienced coaching staff. Former Fulham and Halifax manager Paul Bracewell joins as assistant coach, bringing extensive Football League experience. Interim coaches Craig Ross and Jake Hyde will remain part of the setup.

Ross earned praise for his temporary management. He guided Woking to four wins and three draws across eight matches, maintaining the team’s stability. Ross will manage the squad one final time for Tuesday’s fixture against Altrincham before Defoe assumes full control.

Character and Culture

Director of Football Jody Brown stressed that Defoe’s character and commitment to high-performance standards influenced the decision. The club believes his determination and alignment with their tactical philosophy will elevate the squad’s mentality as Woking pursues playoff contention. The club currently sits 11th in the National League, 18 points below the playoff zone, making Defoe’s appointment critical to their ambitions for the remainder of the campaign.
