Flamengo has officially announced Leonardo Jardim as their new head coach. The Brazilian giants confirmed the appointment Wednesday evening, local time, with Jardim stepping in for Filipe Luís, who was surprisingly dismissed just Tuesday.
Jardim, 51, previously managed Brazilian top-flight club Cruzeiro last year, guiding them to a respectable third-place finish in the Série A. His coaching career also includes stints with European powerhouses like Benfica and Monaco.
The Portuguese tactician has signed a contract with Flamengo extending until the end of 2027. He brings with him a seasoned team: António Vieira and José Barros will join his staff, alongside analyst Diogo Dias.
His immediate challenge comes this Sunday in the final of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship. Flamengo, currently 11th in the league, will face their fiercest rivals, Fluminense, in what promises to be a fiery debut for Jardim.
