Jalen Duren walked into his first media session since signing a five-year, $200 million contract extension and made his intentions clear before taking a single question. The 22-year-old center sat behind a podium Sunday, phone placed in front of him, and delivered a roughly six-minute opening statement that left no doubt about where his future lies.
“I am a Detroit Piston. I want to be a Detroit Piston for life,” Duren said. “I want to give everything I’ve got for this city and the fans. And from me to y’all, y’all would have everything I have. Y’all will get everything I can give. And to the city, I want the city to know that I truly do believe in what we’re building.”
Duren’s statement followed remarks from Detroit Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon, who opened the news conference by praising the center’s role in the franchise’s turnaround.
“Today is a great day. On behalf of the entire Detroit Pistons organization, we are extremely excited to have JD back in the city of Detroit,” Langdon said. “He has been a huge part of our success and the turnaround over the past two seasons. We look forward to building together to have even more success going forward into the future.”
The deal ends an offseason-long negotiation that stretched from the final buzzer of last season’s playoffs through the start of training camp. Langdon’s confidence in getting Duren signed never wavered, according to his comments Sunday, and the front office’s stated goal throughout was keeping the center in Detroit for the long haul.
Addressing the Offseason Noise
Duren spent part of his opening statement confronting what he called “false narratives” that circulated during the negotiation process. He clarified that none of the speculation originated from him, and he expressed no frustration toward the reporters covering the story.
He acknowledged, though, that his silence during the process likely created space for rumors to spread.
“From the moment I stepped into Detroit, my first workout here,” Duren said, looking up from his phone toward the room, “I told my agent that this is where I wanted to be. This is where I felt home; this is where I felt most comfortable.”
Owning a Rough Postseason
Duren didn’t dodge questions about his underwhelming playoff performance last season. His tone stayed matter-of-fact as he discussed the film sessions that filled his summer and the self-assessment that followed.
“It was humbling. I just need to get better,” Duren said. “I need to get better for my teammates, my organization. There was a lot of film, a lot of film that was being watched over the summer. Just trying to learn myself, coming to that realization and looking myself in the mirror and saying, ‘I do need to get better.'”
He continued, framing his response to last season’s struggles as a matter of accountability rather than denial.
“I’m man enough to acknowledge my flaws, and I’m man enough to acknowledge that I’m not perfect. I’m also man enough to get my ass in the gym and work on those things and get better. I’m not trying to run from anything.”
Duren described last season as containing some of his career’s highest and lowest moments, and said he’s learned to redirect frustration into improving his game rather than dwelling on it.
Alignment Across the Roster
Duren, All-Star guard Cade Cunningham and coach J.B. Bickerstaff appeared aligned throughout the contract talks, based on the tone of Sunday’s availability. The Pistons’ official account posted twice during the process, first confirming the signing and later emphasizing the club’s commitment to Duren.

Return to the Court Still Unclear
The Pistons have yet to release an injury report ahead of their preseason opener Monday at home against the Phoenix Suns. Duren missed training camp during the negotiation, making it reasonable to expect Detroit eases him back into action rather than rushing his return, though nothing has been ruled out officially.
Duren’s eagerness to rejoin his teammates came through clearly during Sunday’s session. Whether he suits up Monday or waits a bit longer, the long-term partnership between Duren and the Pistons is now locked in.
Relief After a Long Summer
Asked how it feels to finally have the deal finished, Duren pointed to his family as much as himself.
“Relief and excitement, man,” Duren said. “A lot of emotions, a lot of emotions. I’m just happy for my family. Obviously I’m the one who’s frontline, being talked about and everybody’s kind of asking what’s going on? But my family goes through it, too. They hear it too. And I know, you know, what it did to them.”
He closed by tying the deal back to where his career began.
“I’m happy that’s over for them, and now they’re kind of able to get back to just supporting me and supporting my dreams. It’s a sense of relief and excitement. Excited to be back, this is where it all started for me. This is all I know in terms of my career and playing professional basketball. This organization and my team is, you know, the guys that I came in with.”
