Haaland Equals Norway World Cup Record With Brace in 4-1 Win Over Iraq

17.06.2026, 03:53

Erling Braut Haaland scored twice against Iraq to equal Kjetil Rekdal‘s record as Norway‘s all-time top scorer in World Cup history, powering his side to a 4-1 victory in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. The Manchester City striker now has his sights set on claiming that record outright.

“I have to tell him that I’m coming for that record. That’s fun. I’m going to send him a little message.”

Haaland told VG.no after the match, referencing Rekdal directly. Those were his 56th and 57th international goals, scored as Norway made their first World Cup appearance in 28 years, their last being the 1998 World Cup in France, before Haaland was even born.

The result puts Norway at the top of World Cup Group I on goal difference ahead of France after matchday one.

“It’s great to debut in the World Cup and score two goals and win the match. I’m super happy. It was fun.”

Haaland was direct about what comes next, signalling that the performance creates its own pressure.

“Of course I will try. It’s about continuing and not thinking too much. It’s difficult at this stage. But I’ll focus on the next game. And of course, be happy. But also stay calm.”

Former Swedish international Zlatan Ibrahimovic, working as an expert for American broadcaster Fox, assessed Haaland‘s performance at half-time with characteristic precision.

“Look at the efficiency. Two goals. It was a mistake from the goalkeeper, but still a good goal.”

Haaland reflected on his two strikes when speaking to the same channel afterward.

“The first goal was nice, and the second even better.”
