Future of Aleksib: where will the Finnish IGL go?

28.07.2022, 08:51

The start of this season was pretty good for Aleksib. He joined G2, an ambitious team, and received the chance to work with one of the best players in the world – NiKo. The first tournaments were also successful for the Finnish IGL, and his team qualified for BLAST Spring Finals and took 2nd place at IEM Katowice 2022. But in March, they faced the first problem: they didn’t make a playoff appearance within ESL Pro League Season 15 in a group with NiP, Fnatic, Entropiq, MOUZ, and LFO.

The results of G2 in the first half of the season are not a disaster. But if we compare the ambitions and expectations with results, we will realize that they were not fullfilled. Therefore, G2 allowed Aleksib and JackZ to look for a new team. If it’s clear that the Frenchman belongs with the local team, there are some exciting options for the Finnish player.

Let’s check the two teams where Aleksib can continue his career soon.

The British organization has an ambiguous year. After rebuilding the squad with three British and two Swedish players, Fnatic won a couple of tournaments that looked promising. But after IEM Katowice 2022, smooya was benched, Brollan acquired by NiP, and dark ages returned to the team.

After that, Fnatic decided to bench ALEX, kept mezii and Krimz, and built a new roster around them. They bough nicoodoz and roeJ from Copenhagen Flames, and took HEAP from Dignitas for the trial. But they didn’t play many tournaments in this roster before the players’ break, so we don’t know the entire situation on the team.

Fnatic can still make some changes and find a new fifth player. Aleksib can be that player. mezii is now playing as the IGL in this team. This guy made good progress during the last 1,5 years. He played in Cloud9, spent some time in Endpoint, and was sold to Fnatic. He continued to show good stats in this team in the matches against tier-1 teams, so his place in the team is fully deserved. But I’m personally not sure about him as an IGL. He doesn’t have much experience, and he looks better as a rifler.

So we concluded that Fnatic needs an IGL. They can choose a former teammate of nicoodoz and roeJ – Hooxi. On the other hand, they can think Aleksib will bring more impact to the team than the Danish IGL. I believe that the results of Aleksib in the G2 are not his problem. The problem is that it’s just not his team. And he can do much better on another team with other players.

And Aleksib can show his strengths in Fnatic, with players like nicoodoz, roeJ, and mezii. This project looks similar to OG, but in my opinion, with more promising players.

Another variant for Aleksib is an Evil Geniuses. All we know is that the North American scene is in decline. Now big regional organizations are trying to create rosters to compete with the best European teams. Team Liquid has already shown promising results in Cologne early this month with YEKINDAR. Evil Geniuses, who faced problems in the first half of this season, are now looking for new players. They understand that it is too early to take players who are in other EG teams.

So there is only one way: try to bring someone from Europe. Aleksib is one of these variants. For him, it will be an exciting chance. He never played in North America. His knowledge is valuable and can help players from this region. Additionally, Evil Geniuses have slots for all tier-1 tournaments, so the Finnish IGL has a chance to compete against the best teams in the world.

And, of course, it’s easier to qualify for a Major in North America. Aleksib has a good history of playing in Majors with ENCE. Overall, this change is not looking bad. Aleksib can continue to play at tier-1 tournaments and qualify for the Rio Major. And even if the results won’t be satisfactory, he can return to Europe after the Major.
