Enzo Fernández has been photographed in Madrid just weeks after Chelsea disciplined the Argentine midfielder for publicly expressing interest in joining Real Madrid. The 25-year-old midfielder appeared in the Spanish capital less than 24 hours after delivering a Man of the Match performance in Chelsea‘s 1-0 FA Cup semi-final victory over Leeds United, accompanied by teammates Marc Cucurella and Joao Felix.
Fernández was photographed attending the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament, seemingly unbothered by the recent tension at Stamford Bridge. The timing of his visit has reignited questions about his commitment to the London club, particularly given the disciplinary measures taken against him only weeks earlier.
Chelsea’s Response to Transfer Comments
Early in April, Fernández stirred controversy when he told reporters:
“I’d like to live in Madrid. It’s a beautiful city, reminds me of Buenos Aires.”
His comments prompted Chelsea to impose a two-match internal suspension, keeping him sidelined for fixtures against Manchester City in the Premier League and Port Vale in the FA Cup.
The club’s hierarchy moved decisively to suppress speculation around a move to the Bernabéu. Remarkably, following his suspension, Fernández elected to spend his time off in Madrid itself, though the trip received coaching staff approval. The decision has placed his long-term future at Chelsea under fresh scrutiny.
On-Pitch Excellence Amid Off-Field Friction
Fernández’s performance against Leeds silenced critics momentarily. The Argentine scored a 23rd-minute header and dominated the midfield display, earning Man of the Match accolades. Interim Chelsea manager Calum McFarlane praised his resilience:
“He’s a winner – he’s got so much talent, he’s got so much fire. He’s massive for this group and the best thing about Enzo is that he can do a bit of everything, but when it gets tough, you see the fight in him.”
