Bellamy Backs Johnson’s Quality
Craig Bellamy, the Wales manager, has expressed confidence in Brennan Johnson‘s ability to make an impact under Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur. Bellamy believes Johnson’s quality will eventually shine through as he adjusts to the new manager’s system.
Bellamy dismissed the idea of Johnson being the natural successor to Gareth Bale, stating, “There’s no next Gareth Bale, he’s one in a lifetime.” He emphasized that Johnson should focus on being the best version of himself, highlighting his high intensity, penetration, and goal-scoring ability.
Johnson’s Struggles and Achievements
Johnson was Spurs’ top scorer in the 2024-25 season with 18 goals, including the winner in the Europa League final against Manchester United. However, he has faced challenges under Frank, who took over in June. Johnson made his fifth Premier League start of the season in a match against United, having scored in a Champions League win over Copenhagen but was later sent off, becoming the first British player to score and see red in Europe’s top club tournament.
Bellamy’s Insights
Bellamy acknowledged the difficulties Johnson faces with a new manager and team dynamics. He noted that Johnson’s exceptional numbers and goals last season were a testament to his quality. Bellamy is optimistic that Johnson will adjust and that his quality will eventually be recognized.
Wales’ Upcoming Fixtures
Wales is preparing for November World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia. Currently, Wales is three points behind North Macedonia in Group J but has a game in hand. A second-place finish would secure them a home play-off semi-final, following their Nations League qualification in March.
