One of the most significant inclusions of Patch 5.0 was the removal of Split and the introduction of Pearl. Riot Games addressed community concerns and explained their reasons for removing Split from the competitive map pool, “the teams thinks seven is nice sweet spot that offers both variety and mastery.” The article also adds, “too many maps to learn can feel overwhelming and doesn’t give you an opportunity to go deep on any one of them.”

The removal of Split also had implications for the competitive scene. Riot announced that Split will officially exit the map rotation after the Last Chance Qualifiers to give teams “ample time to practice Pearl before integrating it into the official map pool for Champions.” Pearl will debut in the Champions 2022, potentially shifting the competitive scene for the final event of 2022.
