2022 Reykjavík Stage 1 MastersIceland
OpTic Gaming
LOUD
ZETA DIVISIONAfter eight days of nonstop international Valorant action, we are finally nearing the exciting climax of Masters Reykjavik 2022. With four teams remaining in the first international event of 2022, we will know who will be crowned as the world’s best on Sunday, April 24th. Will it be North America reclaiming its throne? Or is it either Brazil, APAC, or Japan earning their first international title? It is time to do a brief rundown of the last four teams fighting for the title.

LOUD (LLL)
Brazil’s number one representatives find themselves one match away from reaching the Grand Finals of Masters Reykjavik. Backed by one of the most dedicated and passionate fanbases, the Brazilian representatives are looking to secure their first international title for the region. This iteration of LOUD has not lost an official match since its inception (16-0), and they are planning to continue this dominant streak as they prepare to face OpTiC Gaming in the upper bracket finals.

LOUD’s path to reach this position should not be overlooked. Although LOUD earned automatic seeding to the playoffs stage, the Brazilian roster had to play against Team Liquid. Despite TL having experienced members such as Scream and Nivera, LOUD overcame Team Liquid in a three-game series in the quarterfinals. LOUD’s consistency and teamplay were a driving factor in why they came out on top during this series.

The semifinals matchup against G2 Esports was a statement match to witness. LOUD dominated on their map pick, Ascent, and shut down any chance for the European team to start a comeback.

The second map on Breeze was closely contested, but LOUD won the rounds that counted the most and edged past G2 Esports 13-11, sweeping the series 2:0.

The Brazilian representatives are now the favorites to win Masters Reykjavik. Can they continue their undefeated streak through the tournament and win their region their very first international title? After knocking down two European representatives to the lower bracket, it is time to recognize Brazil as a powerhouse region in the Valorant scene.
OpTiC Gaming (OPTC)
The Green Wall is no stranger to lofty expectations. The current roster of OpTiC Gaming was faced with a similar situation last year at Masters Berlin 2021 when they were known as Team Envy. As the only remaining North American team left in the tournament, OpTiC carries the weight of an entire region on its shoulders.

OpTiC Gaming has not had a clean run throughout Masters Reykjavik 2022; a shocking loss to APAC representative XERXIA Esports put a lot of doubt on the North American team. Many people questioned the potential of this team early in the tournament, but it is safe to say that their performances are on par with the expectations given to them. In the group stage, they eliminated LATAM darlings KRÜ Esports and dominated the rematch against XERXIA Esports. These two victories placed them into the knockout stages, where they would play against a familiar face.
The matchup against The Guard in the upper bracket quarterfinals proved to be a competitive matchup for North America’s two strongest teams. OpTiC’s international experience proved to be the x-factor against the young The Guard squad as they took the series 2:1. In their next matchup against Korean superteam DRX, OpTiC played three maps, 73 total rounds, and managed to power through the tough opposition. The path has not been easy for the North American team but working to overcome many of the best teams in the competition, winning the tournament is not as unreachable as it seems.

As the oldest roster in the tournament, OpTiC Gaming relies on the experience of their players, as seen in the matchup against The Guard and DRX. If they overcome LOUD in the upper bracket finals, they will become the favorites to lift the Masters Reykjavik 2022 trophy this Sunday.

Paper Rex (PRX)
The APAC champions have not disappointed in Masters Reykjavik 2022. Despite suffering an early loss to DRX, which knocked them down to the lower bracket, Paper Rex has captured the hearts of many fans as they took down reigning North American champions The Guard with a 2:0 sweep.

As the tournament progressed, the Singaporean core exceeded expectations for their region as they also defeated European first-seed G2 Esports in the lower bracket eliminating all European teams from Masters Reykjavik. We should not be overlooking the strength of this roster and how much the APAC region has grown in the past year.

Eliminating the number one seeds from North America and Europe was no easy task, as the APAC champions move on to face Zeta Division in their next match. Paper Rex has shown the potential to become the world’s best team, and securing their first international win will put APAC is one of the world’s strongest regions.
Zeta Division (ZETA)
The ultimate dark horse team in the tournament, with the lowest expectations from all the analysts and fans. Zeta Division has broken the mold for the Japanese region by making it this far in Masters Reykjavik. It was only a few weeks ago that they were rated as one of the weakest teams in the tournament by many; now, they find themselves as the final four teams remaining.

Zeta Division has not had an easy path to making it this far in the competition. Before Masters Reykjavik 2022, the Japanese region won only two series in all international tournaments 2021. Placed in the most challenging group during the group stages, they had to overcome Fnatic and Ninjas in Pyjamas to qualify for the bracket stage. In the lower bracket stage, they took down Team Liquid and had their revenge against DRX. As they prepare to face APAC champions Paper Rex, Zeta Division will aim to continue to shock many with their cinderella story in Masters Reykjavik.

Regardless of any result, Zeta Division and Japan should be proud of their accomplishments in this Masters Reykjavik. Their story shows that any team can succeed in the Valorant scene regardless of rankings and region.
