Simeone Clashes with Arsenal Chief as Atletico Exits Champions League

15:00Finished05.05.2026

Diego Simeone confronted Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta on the touchline during the final moments of Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. The Atletico Madrid manager’s frustration boiled over as his team desperately sought a late equaliser at the Emirates.

With the match entering stoppage time and Atletico trailing 1-0 on the night, Simeone stormed across the technical area to confront Berta, who had spent over 12 years working alongside the Argentine at Atletico. The Arsenal sporting director was attempting to attract referee Daniel Siebert’s attention, urging him to end the match. Simeone pushed Berta back toward the tunnel before staff from both clubs intervened to separate them. The UEFA fourth official moved in to defuse the escalating tension.

Arsenal Secure Final Berth

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring in the first half for Arsenal, tapping home from close range after Leandro Trossard’s effort was parried by Jan Oblak. That goal proved decisive across the two legs, with Arsenal winning 2-1 on aggregate to advance.

Atletico created chances to level the match. Giuliano Simeone and Alexander Sorloth squandered the best opportunities, ultimately sending the Spanish club out at the semi-final stage.

Road to Budapest

Arsenal’s victory marks their first Champions League final in 20 years. The Gunners will face the winner of the other semi-final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest later this month.

Midfielder Declan Rice reflected on the triumph after the final whistle.

“It is chaos in the dressing room,” Rice told Amazon Prime. “I don’t think you can underestimate what we have done in this competition up to this point. I think we have every right to celebrate that moment. The most prestigious competition in club football. We are just trying to soak it all in. We knew coming into the game what was at stake. If you can’t get up for that, then you can’t get up for any game of football. When we went 1-0 up, I knew we were going to win. I could feel something special building.”
