End of the Road for De Zerbi at Marseille
Roberto De Zerbi has left his position as head coach of Olympique de Marseille by mutual agreement following a string of disappointing results.
The Italian’s tenure at the Stade Vélodrome came to an abrupt close after a 5-0 demolition by Paris Saint-Germain and a 3-0 Champions League defeat at Club Brugge sealed their European exit. Those losses proved the final straw for a club under pressure to deliver.
De Zerbi arrived in the summer of 2024, fresh from a successful stint at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he spent nearly two seasons. His time in France began with promise guiding Marseille to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 last season. But this campaign has been far rockier, with the team currently sitting fourth, 12 points adrift of leaders PSG.
A Decision Made in the Club’s Best Interest
Marseille’s official statement confirmed the split, framing it as a collective choice rather than an outright dismissal.
“Olympique de Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi, coach of the first team, have announced the end of their collaboration by mutual agreement.
Following discussions between all stakeholders in the club’s management the owner, president, director of football, and coach it was decided to make a change at the helm of the first team.
This was a difficult collective decision, taken after careful consideration in the best interests of the club, in order to respond to the sporting challenges of the end of the season.”
The move reflects the high stakes in French football, where expectations remain sky-high despite the dominance of PSG. For De Zerbi, the exit marks another short-lived chapter in a career defined by bold, attacking football and the occasional abrupt departure.
His next steps remain unclear, but the managerial merry-go-round rarely slows for long.
