Real Madrid Activates €50m Release Clause for Schlotterbeck This Summer
Real Madrid are preparing for significant defensive reshuffling this summer. With David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger both out of contract in June, the club must plan replacements. The search for a central defender has proven difficult after missing targets including Marc Guehi, Dayot Upamecano, and Ibrahima Konate, who is nearing a contract extension with Liverpool.
Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund appeared another option, but he recently extended his contract at the Bundesliga club. The extension runs through 2031, keeping him locked down longer than expected. However, the new deal includes a significant mechanism favoring Real Madrid.
According to Diario AS, Schlotterbeck‘s renewal contains a release clause valued between €50-60m. This clause is restricted to select European clubs, with Real Madrid among those granted access. The provision allows the defender to depart at any time if the buyout price is met.
Contract Extension Complicates Schlotterbeck Path
The release clause availability presents an opening for Real Madrid, yet the circumstances have shifted unfavorably. Prior to the renewal announcement, Schlotterbeck was set to become available on reduced terms. His original contract expiration in 2027 would have permitted a discounted transfer this summer.
Now at 26 years old, Schlotterbeck no longer fits Real Madrid‘s transfer strategy. The club prioritizes acquisitions below market value, and the €50-60m clause pricing makes him commercially unviable for their current budget parameters. The renewal fundamentally altered the financial calculus.
The window for a bargain deal has closed. Real Madrid will likely pursue alternative targets, with Schlotterbeck‘s probability of becoming their primary defensive signing substantially diminished compared to pre-renewal scenarios.
