Jean-Philippe Mateta has made his preference clear: he wants out of Crystal Palace and into Manchester United colors when the January transfer window opens. The striker is reportedly ready to force the issue, and his contract situation gives United a genuine opening to get a deal done mid-season.

According to talkSPORT, United plan to target a new forward in January, and Mateta has emerged as a prime candidate. The 29-year-old has entered the final nine months of his current deal at Selhurst Park and has shown “no inclination” to sign an extension, a stance that could pressure Palace into sanctioning a sale rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer. The interest is not confined to Old Trafford either. Recent reports have also linked Mateta with Aston Villa and Tottenham, alongside sustained attention from Saudi clubs, though the player’s own preference reportedly points toward Manchester.

Mateta’s Record at Selhurst Park

Mateta arrived at Crystal Palace on loan from FSV Mainz 05 in January 2021 before the club made the move permanent that summer. His early spell in South London was unremarkable, but his output shifted dramatically under Oliver Glasner’s management.

The Frenchman has made over 200 appearances for Palace, contributing 62 goals and 14 assists across his time at the club. His 2025/26 campaign has carried its own turbulence given the transfer speculation, yet he still produced 16 goals and three assists in 50 appearances, numbers that confirm his status as one of the more reliable forwards in the division.

A Premier League Move in the Making

Manchester United already explored a deal for Mateta in the summer transfer window, though nothing materialized at the time. The renewed interest says plenty about the club’s current attacking shortfalls, with Joshua Zirkzee failing to establish himself as a regular under Michael Carrick.

Carrick has instead leaned on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as cover for Benjamin Sesko, even during spells when the Slovenian has been sidelined. With Sesko battling fitness issues early in the 2026/27 season, signing a recognized number nine has become a priority for United, and Mateta’s physical profile and finishing instincts make him an obvious fit.

Mateta’s familiarity with Premier League football should smooth any transition to Old Trafford. United will need to see off competition from rival suitors, but with the player himself favoring a switch to Manchester, the club holds a clear advantage in the race for his signature.
