North American Match-Fixing Surges Despite Global Decline

12.02.2026, 05:24

Global match-fixing saw a slight 1% reduction throughout 2025, but North and Central America experienced a contrary spike in suspicious betting activity. According to the latest integrity report from Sportradar, the region recorded 84 suspicious matches. This figure represents nearly double the volume of the previous year, highlighting a significant pivot by bad actors toward regions outside traditional European markets.

While Europe saw cases drop to 385 and South America fell to 183, Africa and Asia followed the North American trend with increases to 113 and 351 incidents respectively. Across the globe, Sportradar monitored over one million events, flagging 1,116 suspicious matches across 12 sports and 94 countries.

High-Profile Corruption Hits U.S. Leagues

Recent enforcement actions in the United States illustrate the growing intersection of regulated markets and integrity threats. A federal indictment in early 2025 exposed a point-shaving scheme in NCAA Division I men’s college basketball, where players reportedly took bribes to manipulate dozens of games. Professional leagues faced similar scandals.

  • Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested for allegedly exiting a game prematurely to trigger winning prop bets for accomplices.
  • Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz were charged with pitch manipulation to influence betting outcomes.
  • Clase is accused of rigging pitches in at least 48 separate games.

Advanced Detection Through UFDS AI

To combat sophisticated manipulation, Sportradar is leaning heavily on its Universal Fraud Detection System (UFDS AI). This machine learning technology identified 682 suspicious matches in 2025, a massive jump from 432 the prior year. The system allows analysts to detect subtle irregularities in real-time betting data that often escape manual review.

The company also launched the Integrity Exchange (SIE) in January 2025, enabling operators to share intelligence instantly across the industry.

Education remains a priority, with 34,000 individuals participating in integrity programs, representing a 25% annual increase. These efforts helped facilitate 125 sanctions across seven different sports. Experts remain concerned about lone wolf actors using cryptocurrency and Telegram to coordinate untraceable activities.

Soccer and Basketball Face Most Threats

Soccer continues to be the primary target for fixers, accounting for 618 incidents. Basketball followed with 233 cases, while Tennis reported 78. Live betting remains the most vulnerable stage, involved in 77% of suspicious soccer matches. In these instances, 71% of the activity took place during the first half.

In basketball, bettors primarily targeted over/under totals (49%) and spreads (35%). The college basketball indictment involving 39 players confirms these trends, as participants often focus on controlling point margins rather than losing games outright. This strategy allows fixers to profit while keeping the manipulation less obvious to casual observers. Follow TipsGG for continuous coverage on sports integrity and betting analysis.
