United’s Disappointing Draw Against Wolves
Stand-in captain Lisandro Martinez captured the frustration perfectly after Manchester United’s lackluster 1-1 draw with Wolves at Old Trafford. “The lads are very disappointed,” he admitted. “We expect better.”
The sentiment was echoed by the United faithful, who booed their team off the pitch. This was a Wolves side that had lost 11 straight league games before Tuesday, yet they managed to secure their first point since early October.
Fans’ Frustration and Team’s Struggles
Chants of “attack, attack, attack” filled the stadium in the second half as United struggled to create meaningful chances. Head coach Ruben Amorim responded by replacing central defender Ayden Heaven with another defender, Leny Yoro, leaving teenage forwards Chido Obi and Shea Lacey on the bench.
This draw is part of a troubling pattern. United have lost to a 10-man Everton, failed to beat third-bottom West Ham, and conceded four goals to Bournemouth. Their only recent victory was a Boxing Day win over Newcastle.
Amorim’s Confidence Amidst Injuries
Despite the setbacks, Amorim remains optimistic. “I’m really confident,” he stated. “We just need to recover all the players. I don’t know what is going to happen until the end of the season. Then we will make the resume of the season. But I’m really confident when we recover all the players we are going to be a strong team.”
The injury list is indeed long. Mason Mount became the eighth player sidelined, joining the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Kobbie Mainoo. The lack of creativity is evident, with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko still finding their footing.
Zirkzee’s Struggles and Transfer Speculation
Joshua Zirkzee, who scored the opening goal with a deflected shot, was taken off at half-time. This decision has fueled speculation about his future, with Serie A side Roma reportedly interested in signing him.
Amorim defended his choices, stating, “I just look at what I can do to win the game. We needed to do what the game was asking because we were struggling.”
Ratcliffe’s Concerns and Future Prospects
Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has expressed concerns about the club’s spending on players who are not contributing. Zirkzee, a £36.5m signing from Bologna, is one such example.
Wolves boss Rob Edwards mentioned the negativity in the stands to his players at half-time, understanding how damaging it can be. “Everyone turned up expecting a win, maybe a comfortable one, and it wasn’t that,” he said.
Amorim acknowledged the lack of fluidity and quality, stating, “Today, we could win but we had a lack of fluidity, a lack of quality and a lack of creation of chances. Then we suffered a goal with a set-piece. These details are important to win games in difficult moments.”
As 2026 begins, it’s clear that United’s performance in the winter transfer window will be crucial in determining their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
