Senior Manchester United players have rallied behind Lisandro Martinez after his explosive post-match outburst, with talkSPORT understanding several first-team figures share the defender’s frustration with the club’s hierarchy. Martinez used a bombshell interview following Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid to call out sporting director Jason Wilcox over a perceived lack of squad strengthening, and his comments have struck a chord inside the dressing room.

Senior Stars Back Martinez’s Stance
talkSPORT has been told the Argentine defender is not alone in his dissatisfaction. Multiple sources inside the Manchester United camp point to growing unease among senior players over what they view as limited ambition at board level, with Wilcox squarely in the firing line.
There is a feeling within the squad that Wilcox failed to capitalize on the momentum generated during the second half of last season. The sporting director brought in three midfielders over the summer window, yet other areas of the squad that required reinforcement were left unaddressed.
Bruno Fernandes has shown visible frustration during United’s recent slump, and question marks remain over his long-term future at Old Trafford.
What Martinez Said
Martinez did not mince words when speaking to Amazon Prime moments after the full-time whistle in Madrid.
“It was really poor, really poor,” Martinez said. “I have to control myself a lot. But sometimes it’s a reflection of our club at the moment. We did it last season and now we expect more from the top.”
“To bring more players, to compete. Other teams bring in many more players. I expect more from everyone… 100 per cent I expected more from our technical director.”
“I have to be honest and also the players have to do more but it’s just important when you make a strong squad for this type of night.”
The defender went further, reflecting on the progress United had made before this setback.
“Last season we created a base to build an amazing team. It’s annoying and disappointing to come here and I’m not seeing my team get an amazing result here.”
A Growing Rift at Old Trafford
The dressing room’s apparent alignment with Martinez signals a deeper problem than a single bad night in Madrid. When senior players back a teammate’s criticism of the sporting director, it exposes cracks between the squad and the club’s recruitment strategy.
Wilcox now faces mounting pressure to justify the summer’s transfer approach. Three midfield signings addressed one position while other areas, by the players’ own admission, went unattended.
