Manchester United’s transfer efforts hit a roadblock as Aston Villa reportedly turned down an audacious loan approach for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Having already secured Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this summer, United appear far from finished in the transfer market. Ruben Amorim is still pushing for reinforcements ahead of the club’s Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 18.
United’s pursuit of Martinez highlights their intent to find a high-caliber goalkeeper—yet without splashing significant cash. Despite Martinez’s previous emotional farewell at Villa Park and ongoing speculation about a move abroad, Villa remain firm: the Argentine is not available for a short-term exit.
Loan Move Rejected—But Signals United’s Strategy
Romano reports that Villa have outright rejected the terms proposed for a temporary deal. The message from the Birmingham club is clear—Martinez, under contract until 2029, will not leave unless a substantial offer arrives.
This rejection says as much about United as it does about Villa. The Red Devils are clearly hedging their bets, reluctant to commit major funds to a new No.1 unless they can offload André Onana. The Cameroonian, still expected to start the season between the sticks, now finds himself in a situation eerily similar to Martinez’s—under scrutiny but under contract.
Villa Play Hardball Ahead of New Season
Despite external interest, including from Atletico Madrid and the Saudi Pro League, Villa are playing it cool. Martinez has yet to appear in pre-season, with new signing Marco Bizot being tested as a potential first-choice. Still, unless a serious bid materializes, Villa’s stance remains unyielding.
For United, the message is loud and clear: unless there’s a seismic shift in the market—or in their own willingness to sell Onana—Martinez will remain out of reach.
