Flamengo Finalize Record Deal for Lucas Paqueta
West Ham United sanctioned the departure of Lucas Paqueta to Flamengo on Wednesday, marking a historic financial milestone for South American football. The Brazilian midfielder returns to his boyhood club in a deal reportedly valued at 42 million euros.
“West Ham United can confirm that Lucas Paqueta has been given permission to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Brazilian club Flamengo, after a fee was agreed for his permanent transfer,” the club stated in an official release.
At 28, Paqueta heads back to Rio de Janeiro following a turbulent period in the Premier League. While his technical influence on the pitch remained high, off-field complications dictated much of his recent trajectory in London. A potential 80 million pound move to Manchester City collapsed two seasons ago amid a Football Association investigation into betting breaches. Although the player was cleared of spot-fixing allegations in July, the ordeal significantly altered his market value and career path.
The 42 million euro fee sets a new benchmark for transfers within the continent, illustrating Flamengo’s growing financial dominance. Paqueta originally left the Rubro-Negro in 2019 for AC Milan before finding his best European form at Lyon and subsequently West Ham. His exit leaves Julen Lopetegui with a creative void to fill in the Hammers’ midfield ahead of the domestic campaign.
