Liverpool remain firmly interested in Aleksandar Stankovic, and the club could launch a fresh approach for the Inter Milan midfielder next year. The 21-year-old Serbian international appeared on the Reds’ radar during the summer transfer window, when talks over a deal for Curtis Jones opened a wider conversation about Stankovic’s future at Liverpool. Jones eventually completed his move to Inter Milan, but Stankovic stayed at San Siro, and the Reds have committed to monitoring his progress throughout the season.

Stankovic has followed his father’s path into professional football and built a reputation as a potentially world-class midfielder over the past few seasons. Born in Milan, he spent his formative years in Italy and progressed through the youth ranks at Inter Milan. He found fresh footing after leaving the Nerazzurri to join Club Brugge last year, and the move paid off almost immediately.

Stankovic scored nine goals and added five assists across 55 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign at Club Brugge. That output attracted attention from several leading clubs, with a handful of Premier League sides monitoring him closely during the summer window.

A switch to England never materialised. Stankovic rejoined Inter Milan instead, but he has struggled to gain a foothold at San Siro, managing just seven minutes across a single Serie A appearance this term. That lack of game time could unsettle the youngster and open the door for suitors to make their move in the coming windows.

Premier League Move Still on the Horizon?

Liverpool tried to sign Stankovic in the summer but couldn’t finalise a deal. The continued interest makes tactical sense. The Reds are searching the market for a holding midfielder capable of shouldering defensive duties currently split between Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister.

Bringing in a dedicated defensive midfielder would free that trio to push forward and operate in advanced areas without defensive concerns weighing on their game. Mac Allister’s situation adds urgency to the search. His comments this week about feeling “very sad” over the lack of a new contract offer have reignited speculation linking him with Real Madrid.

Stankovic could slot into Liverpool’s midfield regardless of how the Mac Allister situation resolves. His reading of the game and recovery pace out of possession stand out, and he has shown real productivity in the final third too. That combination is rare in the current market. Liverpool should push hard to sign him next year if his struggles for minutes at Inter Milan persist.
