Jonathan Rowe has officially swapped Ligue 1 for Serie A, signing a four-year deal with Bologna after a dramatic fall-out at Marseille. The Italian club reportedly paid €19.5 million for the 22-year-old England U21 international, who becomes their latest attacking reinforcement.
Rowe’s departure from Marseille came just days after a violent dressing-room altercation with Adrien Rabiot. The clash, described by coach Roberto De Zerbi as “a bar fight,” left both players on the transfer list and stunned the French football community.
“It was a fight like I’ve never seen in all my years in football,” admitted De Zerbi. “For the first time in my career, I didn’t know what to say or what to do. The bodyguards were separating our own players.” Club president Pablo Longoria went further, calling the incident “extremely violent.”
Rowe’s spell at Marseille was mixed. Signed initially on loan from Norwich City last season, he scored three goals in 28 Ligue 1 appearances before making the move permanent in the summer. But his stay was short-lived, as Tuesday’s bust-up sealed his fate. Marseille released a short statement, simply wishing him “Good Luck.”
The timing of the move is significant for both clubs. Marseille bounced back from opening-day disappointment with a 5-2 win over Paris FC, keeping their Champions League preparations on track. Bologna, meanwhile, kicked off their Serie A campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat at Roma, underlining the need for fresh attacking options.
For bettors and fans alike, Rowe’s arrival in Serie A adds intrigue. Bologna will hope his pace and directness can provide a cutting edge in a league where fine margins often decide matches. With the Italian Cup holders eyeing another strong domestic run, Rowe could prove to be a shrewd addition — if he leaves the drama behind in France.
