Gary Lineker Identifies West Ham as Arsenal’s Title-Threatening Fixture
Gary Lineker has pinpointed West Ham away as the fixture most likely to damage Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge. Mikel Arteta‘s side returned to the summit with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, courtesy of an early goal from Eberechi Eze. The win came after two consecutive league defeats, with Arsenal laboring for attacking rhythm but securing the crucial three points.
Manchester City failed to capitalize immediately, temporarily suspending their title push to compete in the FA Cup. Pep Guardiola‘s side mounted a comeback to beat Southampton 2-1 and advance to the final, where they will face Chelsea, who eliminated Leeds United. Arsenal’s fixture schedule offers them the chance to extend their advantage to six points before City’s next match.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker assessed Arsenal’s remaining campaign with clinical detail. The club targets their first league title since 2004, but their recent form raises questions about mental state rather than quality.
‘Arsenal are just not really creating at the moment and they weren’t like this in the first half of the season. They were so impressive so I don’t know if it’s nerves or a confidence thing but they look so edgy. Of course the result is the most important thing and they managed to get the three points.’
The West Ham Banana Skin
West Ham emerged as Lineker’s primary concern in Arsenal’s remaining fixtures. The Hammers, once mired in relegation trouble, have stabilized their league position and climbed two points clear of struggling Tottenham. Their recent record rivals that of top-flight contenders, making the away fixture at the London Stadium a legitimate threat.
‘They have Fulham at home and then West Ham away, now that will be tricky. West Ham are fighting for their lives and playing well at the moment. They’ve got pretty much as good a record as almost anyone since the turn of the year so that will be a tough one for Arsenal.’
Arsenal’s remaining schedule includes home matches against Fulham and Burnley, with away trips to West Ham and Crystal Palace on the final day. Lineker expects Burnley at home to present minimal resistance but recognized the inherent difficulty of away fixtures at both West Ham and Crystal Palace.
Title Race Assessment
When weighing the complete picture, Lineker rated Arsenal and Manchester City‘s prospects as evenly balanced.
‘So overall I would say Arsenal have got slightly easier fixtures than Man City but we know that City down the stretch are usually pretty good. I think it’s pretty much 50-50, isn’t it? I would say it’s pretty much 50-50 between Arsenal and Manchester City.’
Before Arsenal resume their Premier League title battle against Fulham at the Emirates Stadium, they must navigate the Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone‘s fourth-placed La Liga outfit eliminated leaders Barcelona in the previous round, demonstrating their capacity to upset established favorites.
