Frenkie de Jong’s return to training lasted only minutes. The FC Barcelona midfielder cut short his first session back on Tuesday afternoon, still feeling significant pain in his knee, according to SPORT.
De Jong picked up the knee injury at the end of last season. He played through the World Cup on injections and severe pain, a decision that appears to have worsened the condition. Barcelona are unhappy that the playmaker pushed through the tournament without disclosing the full extent of the problem, and coach Hansi Flick has since stripped him of the captaincy over the matter.
After more than six weeks of rest, De Jong was back on the pitch Tuesday but lasted only a few minutes before the discomfort returned and he was forced inside. Surgery remains a real possibility if the injury does not heal naturally, and that now appears to be the direction things are heading.
SPORT report that a return for De Jong is still a long way off. Follow TipsGG for the latest updates on this situation as it develops.
