As VCT Masters Copenhagen 2022 is in full swing, it seems that Riot Games have adopted a new rule to their event rulebook: no national flags are allowed on-stage. For some, this ruling is understandable, as esports is supposed to transcend borders and unite players. For others, it blocks their ability to spread the word about what is happening in their homeland.

OpTic GamingAs many sports and esports sponsors begin implementing policies to tone down on shows of politics during the competitions, the Ukrainian player delivers a simple and powerful message to remind the rest of the world of what is currently happening in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.

Kyrylo “ANGE1” Karasov is a Ukrainian professional Valorant player. He is currently the in-game leader for the team FunPlus Phoenix. A former Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player, Kyrylo is most known for his long-standing career in HellRaisers. ANGE1’s esports career is impressive, as he first debuted in 2006 and has competed professionally with few breaks ever since.
It is not allowed to go out on stage with a flag at Masters. But I can remind all of you here in twitter that im from Ukraine.
Country where hundreds of civilian people die every day, just because russia wants to see us as their colony or destroyed. pic.twitter.com/sBcneN1phz— FPX ANGE1 (@OfficialANGE1) July 17, 2022
Kyrylo follows up his original tweet with another message:
All I want to ask is for people around the world do not forget about war, talk about it, remind your politicians that you care about us, pressure them to send us needed military help. Because there is only one line of defence between mordor and others and unfortunatly its Ukraine
FunPlus Phoenix are currently fighting their way up through the event’s Lower Bracket. Previously, they have defeated the British team Guild Esports 2:1. Their next opponent will be either OpTic Gaming or DRX (depending on which of these teams wins the Upper Bracket Semi-Final match).
