De Zerbi Targets Sassuolo Defender Muharemovic in £26.2m Transfer Push

Tottenham Hotspur have identified Tarik Muharemovic as a summer transfer target, according to reports. The 23-year-old centre-back currently plays for Sassuolo and has emerged as manager Roberto De Zerbi‘s priority addition to the club’s defensive ranks.

Spurs sit 17th in the Premier League under De Zerbi, just one point above West Ham United in the relegation zone. The former Sassuolo, Marseille, and Brighton & Hove Albion boss is building a transfer strategy around proven players from his previous employers. De Zerbi has committed to remaining at the club regardless of their league status next season.

Who Is Tarik Muharemovic?

Muharemovic was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and represents Bosnia-Herzegovina internationally. The 6ft 3in defender spent time at Juventus from 2021 to 2025 before moving permanently to Sassuolo last summer following a loan spell.

In his debut season with the Neroverdi, Muharemovic contributed to their promotion to Serie A. He has since made 27 league appearances in the 2025-26 campaign, scoring 2 goals and providing defensive stability as Sassuolo sit in mid-table. His international credentials strengthened this winter when he played the full 120 minutes in Bosnia-Herzegovina‘s 2026 World Cup playoff final victory over Italy.

The defender has garnered attention for his dominance against Serie A forwards in recent weeks and currently sits on a long-term contract with Sassuolo until 2031.

Transfer Fee and Competition

Sassuolo acquired Muharemovic for €5m (£4.4m) in 2025. The club now demands €30m (£26.2m) to permit his departure, representing an exceptional capital gain on their investment.

Tottenham and Aston Villa lead the Premier League chase for the 23-year-old. Bournemouth attempted to sign him during January but failed to strike a deal. Juventus are plotting a reunion, while Inter Milan have initiated talks with Sassuolo and could capitalize if Tottenham experience relegation.
