Craig Bellamy Reveals Intensive Care Battle After Ruptured Appendix on Family Holiday

Wales manager Craig Bellamy has opened up on a health scare that landed him in intensive care during the summer of 2025, revealing that a ruptured appendix nearly derailed his preparations for a crucial international window.

Bellamy was on a family holiday in Spain in August 2025 when the ordeal began. What started as discomfort he initially dismissed as muscle soreness turned into a medical emergency that required urgent surgery.

Speaking ahead of Wales‘ upcoming Nations League A fixtures, Bellamy described the confusion and pain that preceded his hospitalization.

“It’s stupid but I thought I had stomach cramps because I went to the gym the day before. On the Saturday I woke up and it was killing. I thought it was all the stupid sit-ups I had been doing. I was in agony all day. I got through the day, but on the Sunday I was in more pain.”

He continued to push through the discomfort, planning a family outing before the situation escalated rapidly.

“I spoke with the missus about going to the Beach Club with the kids and I was like: ‘Yeah, we’ll get there and this is going to wear off’. I had a coffee but then I was sweating and I just keeled over. My missus said: ‘You need to go to the doctors now’. My appendix had ruptured and I was in intensive care for a good week. It used to kill you before surgery came in.”

A Grueling Trip to Kazakhstan

Just weeks after his release from hospital, Bellamy embarked on a 6,000-mile round trip for Wales’ World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan. The team secured a narrow 1-0 victory, though the campaign ultimately ended without qualification for this summer’s finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Bellamy admitted the physical toll of the surgery was still visible during that fixture.

“There was no danger of missing the game but I had to have check-ups. But if you look back at the Kazakhstan game, you could see how white I was. I was really struggling.”

The manager also revealed he sought reassurance from within his own squad, discovering that some of his players had endured similar medical emergencies.

“I told the players because I wanted to know if anyone had been through it. One or two had. My first words to them were: ‘How painful is this?’ I’ve never known anything like it. It was a bad summer.”

Wales Return to Action

Bellamy’s side now turn their attention to a demanding four-match international break. Wales kick things off on Thursday with a trip to Lisbon to face Portugal, before heading to Copenhagen three days later to take on Denmark.

The squad will then return to Cardiff for a pair of home fixtures against Norway and Denmark, closing out a schedule that will test the depth and resilience of Bellamy’s group as they look to build momentum heading into the new year.
