Cole Palmer Transfer to Man Utd Moves Closer After Chelsea Miss Europe

26.05.2026, 03:07

Cole Palmer has placed Manchester United on red alert after Chelsea failed to qualify for European football next season. A 2-1 defeat to Sunderland on the final day of the Premier League season left the Blues in 10th place, while the Black Cats celebrated securing a spot in the Europa League.

Xabi Alonso is set to take charge at Stamford Bridge, replacing interim boss Calum McFarlane, but he arrives with an immediate problem. The BlueCo-assembled squad is bloated and will be cut significantly over the coming months, with several high-profile players expected to seek European football elsewhere.

Palmer is among those whose future is uncertain. The 24-year-old endured a difficult past 12 months and was left out of Thomas Tuchel‘s 26-man England squad for the World Cup. He departed Manchester City three years ago to lead Chelsea‘s attack, and speculation about a return to Manchester has intensified in recent months.

His own words have only added fuel to the speculation. Last month, Palmer told TNT Sports:

“I believe in what the club are doing. Hopefully, I and we [Chelsea] can win a lot. If we’re not in the Champions League, a lot changes. Everything changes, really.”

With Chelsea finishing outside every European competition, that comment now carries real weight.

At the time those words were spoken, Palmer moved to push back directly against exit talk. In an interview with the Guardian last month, he addressed the prospect of moving to Manchester United head-on:

“Everyone just talks. When I see it I just laugh. Obviously Manchester is my home. All my family are there, but I don’t miss it. Maybe I’ll miss it if I don’t go for three months or something. But then when I get home I think there’s nothing there for me anyway. I’ve got no plans to move from Chelsea. We’ve still got a lot to play for. We’ve got the FA Cup semi-final [against Leeds] and if we finish in a Champions League spot it puts us in a good position to sign players that we need. We spoke to the owners and they’re sure of the players that are gonna do it. Reece [James] won’t sign a six-year contract if he’s not spoken to the owners and the directors. Me and Reece spoke a lot. About things we need, players we need to sign and how things need to be. He wouldn’t sign a new contract if he didn’t know what was going on.”

Those assurances were conditional on Chelsea securing Champions League football. That condition was not met. Palmer‘s contract at Stamford Bridge runs until 2033, meaning any departure would command a significant fee, but the club’s financial pressures and the player’s own admission that “everything changes” without European football have shifted the dynamic considerably.
