Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has been handed a significant boost in his pursuit of Lamine Camara, with Chelsea now stepping back from a deal that once looked close to completion over the summer.
Chelsea came within touching distance of signing Camara from Monaco on the final day of the summer transfer window. An agreement had been reached among all parties, yet Monaco pulled the plug on the move at the last moment, leaving Chelsea’s business unfinished.
TEAMtalk’s transfer insider, Graeme Bailey, reported on September 28 that Chelsea remained interested in Camara despite the summer collapse. The situation shifted on October 15, when transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher revealed that Liverpool were compiling dossiers on the midfielder, who is contracted to Monaco until the summer of 2029.
The Sun followed up on October 28, reporting that Liverpool had made contact with Camara’s camp and that talks were continuing behind the scenes. Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs told TheCFCHub in early October that Monaco were seeking £60million for their midfielder, setting the asking price that now shapes Liverpool’s approach.
Chelsea decide NOT to sign Lamine Camara
Chelsea, who appointed Xabi Alonso as manager in the summer of 2026, have reportedly moved away from Camara entirely. According to transfer journalist Pete O’Rourke in Football Insider, the club’s focus has shifted toward Alex Scott of Bournemouth ahead of the January transfer window.
“Camara was very close to joining Chelsea in the summer transfer window before that collapsed at the eleventh hour,” O’Rourke said. “It remains to be seen if Chelsea would renew their interest in Camara, but I think they are looking at other targets instead and have moved on from that deal.”
“Alex Scott, right now, is ahead of Camara on Chelsea’s list of targets for the January transfer window, that’s a deal they would like to finally get over the line.”
Fraser Fletcher has reported separately that Chelsea’s interest in Scott runs deep enough that the club is prepared to pay over £100million to Bournemouth for his signature. That figure signals where Chelsea’s priorities now sit, and it leaves Camara’s situation open for Liverpool to exploit.
What this means for Liverpool’s pursuit
With Chelsea effectively out of the picture, Liverpool face a clearer run at Camara, who remains one of the most sought-after midfielders outside the Premier League’s established elite. The 22-year-old has drawn admiration for his range of passing and composure under pressure, qualities that fit the profile Iraola has prioritized since taking charge at Anfield.
Monaco’s £60million valuation sets a firm marker for any suitor, and Liverpool’s scouting work, already advanced according to Fletcher’s October reporting, suggests the club see Camara as a long-term investment rather than a short-term fix. The contract situation, with Camara tied to Monaco until 2029, gives the French club leverage in negotiations even as interest intensifies.
