31.03.2025, 09:49

The anticipation surrounding Chelsea’s journey in the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup has taken an unexpected turn. With the tournament set to be staged in the United States this summer, the Blues—one of two Premier League representatives alongside Manchester City—are still awaiting clarity on their Group D lineup.

Club León’s Expulsion Sparks Uncertainty

Initially drawn against Flamengo, Esperance Tunis, and Club León, Chelsea now face uncertainty after FIFA ruled against the latter’s participation. León’s expulsion stems from FIFA’s multi-club ownership regulations, as their parent company also controls Pachuca, the reigning CONCACAF Champions Cup winners. The Mexican club has since lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking reinstatement.

FIFA Considers Playoff Solution

In light of León’s removal, FIFA has confirmed its intention to stage a one-off playoff to determine their replacement. The two teams under consideration are Los Angeles FC and Club América, both of whom hold legitimate claims to the vacant spot.

In an official statement, FIFA announced:

“FIFA can confirm that it is considering a playoff match between LAFC and Club América for the right to participate in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, replacing Club León. LAFC would participate in the match because they were the runners-up in the 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup, which León won. América would participate because they are the highest-ranked team in Concacaf in the FIFA Club World Cup rankings. Further details will be provided in due course.”

The stakes are undeniably high. Any club securing a place in the tournament is guaranteed a minimum payout of £9.9 million, amplifying the significance of FIFA’s forthcoming decision.

Unresolved Timeline: When Will the Playoff Take Place?

Despite the urgency of the matter, FIFA has yet to confirm a date for the proposed playoff. The governing body awaits the outcome of Club León’s appeal before proceeding with any scheduling.

With the competition set to kick off on June 14, FIFA aims for a swift resolution. Chelsea’s first fixture is scheduled for June 16 in Atlanta, where they will face either Flamengo, Esperance Tunis, or the eventual playoff winner.

As the countdown to the Club World Cup continues, Chelsea remain poised for their campaign—eagerly awaiting the final piece of their Group D puzzle.
