The 2026-27 NBA season tips off on October 20, and the league barely looks like itself. A summer of blockbuster moves sent superstars across the map, broke up title cores, and opened the door for teams that were afterthoughts a year ago. The defending champion New York Knicks start their title defense at Madison Square Garden against a rebuilt Philadelphia 76ers side, while last season’s Western Conference finalists meet in San Antonio on the same night. This guide covers everything you need before the ball goes up: the key dates, the NBA Cup, the biggest moves, and a full conference-by-conference breakdown.

Christmas Day carries extra weight this year, with LeBron James returning to Los Angeles as a visitor for the first time after eight seasons with the Lakers.

Where the 2025-26 NBA Season Left Off

To understand this season, start with how the last one ended:

  • Knicks crowned champions: New York beat San Antonio 4-1 in the Finals, closing it out 94-90 in Game 5 for the franchise’s first title since 1973.
  • A historic double: The Knicks became the first team to win the NBA Cup and the NBA Finals in the same season.
  • Spurs survive the West: San Antonio edged Oklahoma City in a seven-game Western Conference finals.
  • SGA goes back-to-back: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won MVP for the second straight year.
  • Detroit’s breakout: The Pistons won 60 games and the East’s top seed, then fell to Cleveland in a Game 7.

Biggest NBA Offseason Moves Reshaping the Title Race

The headline story of the summer is movement. Several players capable of swinging a championship changed jerseys, and the result is real parity at the top of both conferences.

Player From To
LeBron James Los Angeles Lakers Philadelphia 76ers
Jaylen Brown Boston Celtics Philadelphia 76ers
Giannis Antetokounmpo Milwaukee Bucks Miami Heat
Kawhi Leonard LA Clippers Toronto Raptors
LaMelo Ball Charlotte Hornets Minnesota Timberwolves
Ja Morant Memphis Grizzlies Portland Trail Blazers
Walker Kessler Utah Jazz Los Angeles Lakers
Miles Bridges Charlotte Hornets Phoenix Suns
Mitchell Robinson New York Knicks Boston Celtics
Norman Powell Miami Heat Chicago Bulls

Miami also added Klay Thompson, Utah acquired Jaren Jackson Jr., and Minnesota brought in Jonathan Kuminga in the deal that sent Julius Randle and Naz Reid out. With this many stars in new places, picking a 2026-27 NBA champion is harder than it has been in a long time.

2026 NBA Cup: Format and Groups

The NBA Cup keeps its familiar structure. The 30 teams are split into six groups of five, three per conference, and each team plays every other team in its group once. The six group winners and the two best second-place teams (one per conference) reach the single-elimination quarterfinals. One change: the final four moves from Las Vegas to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Group Teams
East A Pistons, Raptors, Magic, Bucks, Nets
East B Knicks, Cavaliers, 76ers, Heat, Pacers
East C Celtics, Hawks, Hornets, Bulls, Wizards
West A Nuggets, Rockets, Suns, Mavericks, Jazz
West B Thunder, Timberwolves, Clippers, Pelicans, Grizzlies
West C Spurs, Lakers, Trail Blazers, Warriors, Kings

East Group B is the group of death. The Knicks, Cavaliers, 76ers, Heat and Pacers are all genuine Eastern Conference threats, and only one of them is guaranteed a quarterfinal spot.

Western Conference Preview 2026-27

The West runs through San Antonio and Oklahoma City, but the chasing pack has rarely looked this deep. Here is how the conference stacks up:

Tier Teams
Title favorites Spurs, Thunder
Dangerous challengers Timberwolves, Lakers, Nuggets, Rockets
Playoff and play-in hopefuls Jazz, Suns, Trail Blazers, Warriors
Rebuilding or long shots Grizzlies, Mavericks, Clippers, Pelicans, Kings

West Title Favorites: Spurs vs. Thunder

San Antonio Spurs: NBA general managers picked the Spurs as their top championship favorite. San Antonio reached the Finals last season, and the young core around Victor Wembanyama is still improving. Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell are back, with Tobias Harris and rookie Jayden Quaintance added for depth. The title case comes down to two questions about Wemby. Can he score in isolation after the Knicks shut him down in the Finals? And can San Antonio’s one-big defense hold up against stretch bigs, who pulled him out to the three-point line in that series? That the Spurs’ hopes hinge on two specific questions shows how close they already are.

Oklahoma City Thunder: The Thunder remain San Antonio’s biggest threat. Two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads a roster that returns Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, with Cason Wallace and Isaiah Hartenstein stepping into starting roles and Bennedict Mathurin adding depth. Health matters: Williams played only two games of the conference finals. The bigger swing is Holmgren. The Spurs guarded him with smaller players, and he settled for fadeaways instead of punishing the mismatch. If he becomes a real second scorer next to SGA, OKC is the team to beat.

West Challengers: Timberwolves, Lakers, Nuggets and Rockets

Minnesota Timberwolves: After a second-round exit, the Wolves swapped Randle and Reid for LaMelo Ball and Jonathan Kuminga. Preseason has shown a faster team that runs on misses and moves without the ball, with Ayo Dosunmu and Bones Hyland keeping the pace high off the bench. The concern is spacing: neither Kuminga nor four-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert shoots, so Minnesota has to keep the lane open for Ball and Anthony Edwards.

Los Angeles Lakers: With LeBron gone, this is Luka Doncic’s team. After a hamstring injury held him back last season, Doncic pushed for the trade that landed Walker Kessler, the true rim protector the Lakers have lacked for two years. Austin Reaves has grown into a core piece, and JJ Redick now has a defensive anchor to build his scheme around.

Denver Nuggets: A disappointing first-round loss and more departures have dropped Denver out of the top tier, even with Nikola Jokic. The roster is slow laterally, and its point-of-attack defense ranked in the bottom ten. Christian Braun, limited to 44 games by an ankle sprain, is the X-factor. A return to his 2024 form would give Denver the perimeter stopper it badly needs.

Houston Rockets: Houston ranked 25th in three-point shooting and did little to fix it. The best hope is Fred VanVleet, back after missing all of last season. Without him, the Rockets struggled to organize late-game possessions for Kevin Durant.

West Playoff and Play-In Hopefuls: Jazz, Suns, Trail Blazers and Warriors

Utah Jazz: After years of rebuilding, Utah is pushing its chips in with Jaren Jackson Jr., rookie guard Darryn Peterson and an extension for Keyonte George. The surprising key is Jusuf Nurkić, whose screening and passing make him the hub of Will Hardy’s spread offense.

Phoenix Suns: Devin Booker and Jalen Green supply the scoring, and Miles Bridges adds size at forward. The cost was an unprotected 2033 first-round pick, and spacing is a worry: Phoenix lost Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale, while Bridges shot just 33% from three.

Portland Trail Blazers: Adding Ja Morant gives Portland four starting-caliber guards, including Damian Lillard. The talent is obvious; the fit is not. How the rotation shakes out will decide whether this is a playoff team or a mediocre one.

Golden State Warriors: After a play-in exit, the Warriors’ main additions were draft pick Yaxel Lendeborg and Brandon Williams on a one-year deal. With the core aging, Golden State needs a young player to emerge as a building block for life after Stephen Curry.

West Rebuilders to Watch: Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies are fully rebuilding after trading Morant, with Cameron Boozer as the centerpiece. He is a gifted passer and strong finisher, and his shooting will decide his ceiling. He hit 40% from three in college, but mostly worked in the post. Dallas, the Clippers, New Orleans and Sacramento face long seasons near the bottom of the conference.

Eastern Conference Preview 2026-27

The East has never looked deeper at the top. A loaded group of contenders means even a strong team could slip into the play-in. Here is the breakdown:

Tier Teams
Title contenders Knicks, 76ers
Dangerous challengers Celtics, Cavaliers, Pistons, Raptors, Heat, Pacers
Playoff and play-in hopefuls Hawks, Magic
Rebuilding or long shots Bulls, Wizards, Hornets, Nets, Bucks

East Title Contenders: Knicks vs. 76ers

New York Knicks: The champions kept most of their core, with Jalen Brunson leading a team built on collective play. They did lose Mitchell Robinson to Boston, and the second apron is squeezing them. The biggest storyline is Karl-Anthony Towns, who was eligible for a four-year, $276 million extension. New York wants him to take a $75 million cut, and Towns has shown no interest. On the court, watch whether the varied offense that won the playoffs replaces last season’s reliance on Brunson isolations.

Philadelphia 76ers: The Sixers made the summer’s biggest splash, trading for Jaylen Brown and signing LeBron James. At 41, LeBron is the league’s oldest active player and Philly’s primary ball handler. In his preseason debut he took one shot and dished five assists. Paired with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the talent is elite, but five offense-first starters need clear roles. Brown is the key. He has moved from Boston’s primary isolation scorer to an off-ball cutter, and how he accepts that role will shape Philly’s ceiling.

East Challengers: Celtics, Cavaliers, Pistons, Raptors, Heat and Pacers

Boston Celtics: Without Brown, Jayson Tatum carries the scoring load. Joe Mazzulla’s three-point system produced a top-three offense last season even with Tatum out for long stretches, so a top-four seed is realistic. The question is the playoffs, where Boston’s offense has stalled for two straight years and the roster still lacks rim pressure.

Cleveland Cavaliers: The Cavs beat Detroit in a Game 7 before losing to the Knicks in the conference finals. James Harden and Donovan Mitchell give them two elite ball handlers, and Peyton Watson adds the wing defender they lacked against Brunson. The test is composure: when New York made its comeback, Cleveland fell back on tough perimeter shots.

Detroit Pistons: After a 60-win season, Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren should keep Detroit near the top. The playoffs exposed the lack of a second scorer, though. Duren was one-dimensional and Ausar Thompson hit only 14% of his threes. Both just signed long-term extensions, so one of them needs to take a leap.

Toronto Raptors: Toronto has gone all in on Kawhi Leonard, coming off a career year with the Clippers. He fills the primary-scorer role that Brandon Ingram struggled with in the playoffs. The goal is a top-10 offense and a run at a top-four seed, while managing Leonard’s workload.

Miami Heat: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson join Bam Adebayo and Tim Hardaway Jr. on a team that played at the league’s fastest pace last season, which suits Giannis perfectly. The question is Adebayo, a 32% career three-point shooter whose defender can sag into Giannis’ driving lanes. Smart positioning, such as keeping Bam on the strong side so help comes from a shooter like Andrew Wiggins, will decide how far Miami goes.

Indiana Pacers: Tyrese Haliburton is back from a torn Achilles and looks sharp. He scored 24 points against OKC, and in one preseason game the starters had 19 assists on 20 made baskets. The swing factor is Ivica Zubac, who doesn’t stretch the floor like Myles Turner did and must adapt to a high-tempo system.

East Playoff and Play-In Hopefuls: Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have depth but no superstar to carry them in a stacked conference, and they lack a true point guard. Rookie Kingston Flemings is the closest thing they have. If his driving and passing translate, Atlanta becomes far more balanced. Watch whether he plays his way from the bench into the starting lineup. Orlando is also in the play-in conversation.

East Rebuilders to Watch: Bulls, Wizards, Hornets and Nets

  • Chicago Bulls: All-Star Norman Powell joins rookie Caleb Wilson, who is at his best attacking on the move rather than waiting in the corner.
  • Washington Wizards: AJ Dybantsa, Trae Young and Anthony Davis headline one of the league’s biggest lineups, but outside of Kyshawn George the starters struggle to shoot.
  • Charlotte Hornets: After trading LaMelo Ball, the focus is whether Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller can produce in a screen-heavy system without him.
  • Brooklyn Nets: Second-year guard Egor Dëmin added 15 pounds of muscle and pairs with rookie scorer Mikel Brown Jr. in a promising young backcourt.

Milwaukee, now without Giannis, faces a long season of its own.
