The largest annual event of the League of Legends esports ecosystem, Worlds Championship 2022, is back stronger than ever. After a few years of crowd-less LAN events, Worlds 2022 is a breath of fresh air venued across the United States and Mexico with a live audience. With 24 teams from all over the world attending the series, it makes Worlds one of the largest offline events across all esports.
This massive event draws in teams from all around the globe. Teams-representatives from China, Korea, Europe, North America, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Brazil, Japan, Latin America, and Turkey clash over more than a month of non-spot, high-tier action.
The sheer size of this event calls for dividing it into three phases: Play-In, Groups, and Playoffs.
During the Play-In, the teams compete among one another in a single round-robin format in groups of 6. The bottom two teams are eliminated based on their standings. The rest proceeds to the later stage.
During the Group Stage, the remaining 16 teams are divided into 4 groups, where they play in a double-round robin. The top 2 teams of each group advance to the Playoffs.
Playoffs are where the fun really begins. Finally, the teams play through a brutal single-elimination gauntlet in a series of best-of-5 to find the winner of the event.
As for the event recap, DRX has made a historic run. No team has ever made it from Play-In to Grand Final before. As retirement looms over DRX’s legendary ADC, Deft, he and his team have finally managed to break the old curse that prevented them from going above the quarter-finals. On the other hand, the legendary T1 (previously known as SKT T1) roster with the star midlaner Faker is after the title. If T1 wins, it will be the 4th Worlds gold for Faker.
