Key Betting Angles
France look ominous heading into the quarter-finals. Les Bleus swept Sweden aside 3–0 in the Round of 32, with Mbappé scoring twice, and then dispatched Paraguay with a composed penalty win. Kylian Mbappé has now scored three goals in two knockout games and looks in the kind of form that can carry a side to a final — making anytime scorer markets on the PSG forward a consistent consideration.
Morocco are the tournament’s standout overachievers. After navigating a penalty-shootout thriller against the Netherlands in the Round of 32, the Atlas Lions demolished Canada 3–0 in the Round of 16, with Azzedine Ounahi bagging a brace. The forthcoming quarter-final against France is a genuine 50/50 on current form rather than the mismatch some pre-tournament prices suggested.
Portugal vs Spain is the tie of the round. Spain were utterly dominant in seeing off Austria 3–0, with Oyarzabal and Porro in fine fettle, while Portugal needed a late Gonçalo Ramos header to see off Croatia. Spain’s greater fluency and clinical edge in front of goal makes them worth monitoring closely, though an Iberian derby will never lack drama — both teams to score has strong appeal.
Argentina were given an almighty scare by minnows Cape Verde. Messi’s side required extra time to see off the Sharks 3–2, with two own goals doing much of the heavy lifting. That kind of vulnerability against a supposed underdog should temper confidence heading into a last-16 clash with Egypt, who themselves came through extra time against Australia — expect a tight, attritional contest.
Norway and Erling Haaland are a genuine threat to Brazil. Haaland scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute to eliminate Ivory Coast, and Norway face a Brazil side that needed a last-gasp Martinelli goal to beat Japan. The South Americans have shown they can be broken down, meaning the Haaland anytime scorer market — and potentially a Norway upset — is well worth factoring into your Round of 16 selections.
