Key Betting Angles
France are the tournament’s most dominant side so far. Didier Deschamps’ men swept aside Sweden 3–0 with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice, and they now face a Paraguay side that needed extra time just to edge Germany. The gulf in class between these two teams is significant, and France’s defensive solidity combined with their attacking firepower makes them extremely difficult to back against at this stage.
Spain look ruthless and clinical heading into the Iberian derby. A 3–0 dismantling of Austria — with Oyarzabal netting a brace — underlines their efficiency in front of goal. The meeting with Portugal promises to be the tie of the round. Portugal needed a late Ramos header and a Ronaldo penalty to see off Croatia, suggesting there may be vulnerabilities at the back that Spain’s fluid attackers could exploit.
Argentina were given an almighty scare by Cape Verde. Messi’s side required extra time to eventually prevail 3–2, with both of the opposition’s goals coming from set-piece situations and a late rally. Against Egypt in the Round of 16, any defensive frailties could be punished — Egypt’s run to the last 16 included a resilient draw with Australia, and they are well-organised defensively.
Norway’s Erling Haaland is in devastating form. He struck the winning goal in the 86th minute against Ivory Coast, and his strike partner Sander Berge-Nusa showed attacking threat from midfield too. Brazil navigated past Japan with a late Martinelli winner, but they showed vulnerability for long stretches of that game. Haaland vs Brazil’s backline is a mouth-watering individual battle with clear value implications.
Belgium survived a major scare and may be vulnerable. Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans eventually got Belgium over the line against Senegal in extra time, but conceding two goals and being pushed to the brink suggests this side lacks the solidity of tournament winners. Their Round of 16 clash against the United States — who were comfortable 2–0 winners over Bosnia and Herzegovina — is far from a foregone conclusion, with the hosts backed by a vociferous home crowd at Lumen Field.
