Key Betting Angles
- Germany’s goal glut demands respect in Group E. A 7–1 demolition of Curaçao is the most emphatic opening-round result of the tournament so far. With Havertz on penalties, Musiala pulling strings in midfield, and six different scorers, Germany look capable of running up significant tallies. Their goal difference of +6 already dwarfs every other side in the group, and the match-up against Ivory Coast on 20 June will be a genuine indicator of their title credentials.
- Scotland are the tournament’s most surprising group leaders. Steve Clarke’s side top Group C after defeating Haiti 1–0 courtesy of McGinn’s 28th-minute strike, while five-time winners Brazil could only draw with Morocco. Should Scotland avoid defeat against Morocco on 19 June, they could clinch progression with a game to spare — a remarkable situation for a nation making only their second World Cup appearance in the modern era.
- Messi’s hat-trick makes Argentina the standout favourite in Group J. Three goals in 59 minutes against Algeria confirmed that Lionel Messi remains the talisman for the reigning champions. Austria also impressed with a 3–1 win over Jordan, setting up a mouth-watering Group J top-of-the-table clash on 22 June. Both sides arrive unbeaten, and a point apiece could still see either team qualify comfortably.
- Group B is uniquely wide open after a round of draws. All four sides — Switzerland, Canada, Qatar, and Bosnia and Herzegovina — share the same record: one draw, one point, zero goals-for advantage. Every remaining fixture carries maximum importance, and with Canada playing Qatar at home at BC Place tonight (18 June, 11:00pm BST), the hosts have the chance to seize early control of what could become a highly unpredictable group.
- Spain’s goalless draw against Cape Verde is a warning sign in Group H. The 2010 world champions failed to score against one of the lower-ranked sides in the tournament, a result that opens the door for Uruguay and Saudi Arabia — who both scored in their 1–1 draw — to overtake them. Spain’s upcoming clash with Saudi Arabia on 21 June is effectively a must-win fixture if they are to reassert themselves as group favourites.
