Meanwhile, Mainz is having a dream season, sitting third with 45 points and a goal difference of 44:28. Bo Henriksen’s men are unbeaten in six games, though they let a 2-0 lead slip in their last match against Freiburg, despite playing with a man down.

Despite Dortmund’s poor form, the international break might have done them some good. Plus, they’re back at home, avoiding any long away trips. This is a golden chance for Kovac and his squad to turn things around and fight for three crucial points.

However, there’s also the risk that the psychological blow has already broken them, making their situation even more precarious. How this affects their ex-Dortmund and Leverkusen coach remains to be seen.

On the other hand, Ajax sits comfortably at the Eredivisie summit, six points clear of PSV. Even if they lose here, their lead remains solid. Despite being the visitors, the Amsterdam side looks like the stronger team going into this encounter.
