Barcelona ahead of the match
Hansi Flick’s side reach the Clásico top of La Liga with a perfect record: nine wins from nine matches, 27 points and 39 goals scored. They are six points ahead of Real Madrid, and a victory at Spotify Camp Nou would stretch that gap to nine. The latest league results include a 5-2 win away at Real Betis on October 17. The unbeaten run did end in Europe: Barcelona lost for the first time this season on Tuesday, going down 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, with Lamine Yamal scoring again.
Yamal arrives with eight La Liga goals, six assists and 32 chances created, and Raphinha is back after a hamstring problem — he started at PSG for the first time since September 19 and is projected to lead the attack. Barcelona are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 that can look like a 4-3-3 in possession, with Yamal and Anthony Gordon providing the width and Fermín López stepping in between the lines for the injured Dani Olmo.
Defense is the concern. Olmo suffered a left adductor injury against PSG and is expected to be out for around a month, Eric García is sidelined for three to four weeks with a right thigh injury, and Andreas Christensen is unavailable. Jules Koundé missed the PSG game with a left ankle sprain, but Flick has said he is expected back soon, so he is not ruled out for Sunday. Gerard Martín returned from an ankle problem to start in Paris, and if Koundé cannot recover, Martín and Pau Cubarsí are the main natural center-back options after Barcelona conceded four goals at the Parc des Princes.
Real Madrid ahead of the match
José Mourinho’s Real Madrid sit third in La Liga on 21 points, with seven wins, two defeats and no draws from their nine matches — six points behind Barcelona. Results and performances have been uneven in his second spell in charge, but both have picked up recently: Madrid beat Sevilla 4-1 last weekend and followed it with a 4-1 home win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday. Their European run has been solid too, with wins over Inter Milan and Roma earlier in the campaign.
Kylian Mbappé is the focal point. He scored twice against Sevilla and enters Matchday 10 with nine La Liga goals. Arda Güler also scored in that win and should have a significant role, while Jude Bellingham gives Madrid another midfielder capable of arriving in the penalty area. Yan Diomande has also started to find form in recent weeks, which gives Mourinho another option for runs in behind Barcelona’s high line.
The big absence is Vinícius Júnior, who is suspended for the league game after his red card against Villarreal — a ban that covers domestic football only, so it did not affect the midweek European tie — forcing Mourinho to reshape the attacking line. Madrid are also expected to use a 4-2-3-1, with Endrick and Diomande projected around Bellingham and Mbappé. Ferland Mendy missed the Leipzig match as he works back from a serious injury and his availability for the Clásico has not been confirmed, while Raúl Asencio and Rodrygo are also currently listed as out.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid: preview and head-to-head
One of the clearest tactical battles is Yamal against Marc Cucurella on Madrid’s left side. Yamal starts wide on the right but likes to carry the ball inside onto his left foot. If Cucurella follows him aggressively, space opens up outside for an overlapping teammate; if he holds his position, Yamal can receive facing goal and attack the half-space. The positioning around Yamal may matter as much as the one-on-one itself.
Madrid’s best route is likely through transitions rather than long spells of possession, with Mbappé the key runner. Barcelona’s high defensive line lets them compress the pitch and win the ball back quickly, but it also leaves space for Mbappé whenever Madrid play through the first press. Without Vinícius, Endrick and Diomande must provide enough width and counter-attacking threat to stop Barcelona focusing on Mbappé alone, and if Güler or Bellingham can receive behind Barcelona’s first line of pressure, Madrid can go straight at a back line that may feature Martín and Cubarsí with aggressive full-backs either side.
The recent head-to-head is finely balanced. In the last six La Liga meetings, Barcelona have lost three and won three. They took the latest one 2-0 in May to seal the league title, after Real Madrid had won 2-1 in October 2025. Form, home advantage and Barcelona’s attacking output point toward the hosts, while the injuries in their back line and Madrid’s counter-attacking pace make a high-scoring game a real possibility.
